This is exactly why Obama was right to avoid any public statement that would give the Iranis a false target to divert attention from their own crimes. It didn't stop them from trying, but it makes their smoke screen that much more obvious to the rest of the world.

Right from the CIA's own website.

No one is forgetting it, and I agree. It's just irrelevent to this topic.

If it makes you feel any better, I still believe Olly North, John Poindexter and anyone else involved should have been prosecuted for their multiple crimes in the Iran-Contra mess.

The CIA's reputation probably far exceeds it's actual capacity. Thank Hollywood for that I guess.

This is not a thread for conspiracy theories. We may be unable to do anything to actively help the Iranian people, but we can at least acknowledge their suffering and afford it the respect that it deserves.

No offence to anyone intended.

Well the U.S./CIA's track record on Iran and supporting uprisings is hardly something to be proud of. Certainly I wouldn't put something like this past the CIA of the 1950s. But I think in today's world the Iranians are idiots if they think anyone is going to believe that the CIA has agents stealthing around Tehran killing protesters.

C'mon. Everyone knows Neda was killed by Darth Vader after her apology.

Sorry. That's very juvenile of me.

I'm just glad Obama is President, because if it was Bush right now, you could bet your bottom dollar there would be a huge contingent of folks that would believe this.

Well can you blame them? The US has a long history of meddling in Iran's politics. I'm not saying I think this is currently the case, but it isn't really that ridiculous of an idea.

And the US really hasn't gotten involved directly, although we have done some stuff to encourage the protestors. For example the White House asked Twitter to delay maintenance that would have resulted in downtime and therefore cut off an important means of communication for Iranian dissenters.

In the real world of real ideas and actions, where we are witnessing real people dying at the hands of real dictatorial religious wingnuts, YES IT IS THAT RIDICULOUS AN IDEA!

Yes, and the Reichstag fires were started by Bolsheviks and Jews that necessitated the Enabling Acts.

Aww... Stop the strawman bullshit! This is not the nazis burning the Reichstag, and this is not the even CIA propping up the Shah in Iran. If you don't know better, you should.

If you have some evidence that the CIA shot Neda Agha-Soltan as a provocative act, post it on up. If you don't, do the world a favor, and STFU! You just dishonor her memory, and you embarrass yourself.

No one had evidence that the President of Iran was overthrown by the CIA in 1953. No one had evidence that the Nazis burned down the Reichstag in 1933. However, as time marched on, we had more and more evidence accumulate that those parties were in fact responsible.

I'm not dishonoring her memory in any way. I'm simply pointing out that it's not entirely impossible for the CIA to actually have done this. How is that dishonoring her memory? Quit being such a bleeding heart, especially over someone who didn't care about before she got shot. I don't see you shedding tears over the literally hundreds of people who died yesterday fighting for what they believed in, whatever it may have been.

I think some Iranians will believe it though...because of past history. This is a Fox News kinda tactic, state the impossible and let their committed Audience come to the wrong conclusion. Those who support Amijinibad(sp) will take this "fact" and run with it and it won't matter how many first hand accounts(if they ever hear them) are put forth stating the real Facts.

Roll all you want, Iran would have a democratic secular government right now if we had let them profit from their own oil instead of BP.

Thank Jimmy Carter, by your logic.

Eisenhower actually. Carter did the moral thing in backing off support for the Shah but the damage had already been done.

Exactly what I was trying to say. I personally don't believe the CIA had any involvement in the current conflict, but given past history, Iran's distrust of the west is justified. This rhetoric obviously works or else their leaders wouldn't be saying it. Considering what's happened in the past, it's probably not that big of a stretch, at least not to Iranians.

You're right we should capture and kill the bastards responsible for installing the Shah... and blame them for Neda, and Global warming.

Or maybe Iran is exactly what it appears... a fundamentalist nut job regime, who is attempting to misdirect the wrath of its citzens for cheating them out of their rights, by implicating the west in whatever way they possibly can. And in fact the allegations are ridiculous... can see the CIA meeting... ok here's what we'll do... lets go find outselves a 16 year old girl watching a protest... and we'll gun her down... it'll get great press and help us over throw the government of Iran... really? I mean REALLY? get real people.
