There is another obstacle to stopping illegal downloads, said Andre Swanston, the chief executive of Tru Optik, the media analytics firm. People want access to everything, anytime, and there is little to stop them from having it. “Even if you added Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Prime, Sony Crackle and everything else combined, that is still less content available legally than illegally,” he said. “The popularity of piracy has nothing to do with cost — it is all about access.”

Add in the exclusivity agreements...
You have to have accounts with all those services to have access to everything. Services are bringing on original, exclusive productions. Aren't some studios making deals with one service over another?
And find me a set-top box that plays both itunes and Amazon Prime content. You cannot, one does not exist, and will never exist unless itunes loses drastic market share.
And good luck watching your itunes purchases if you buy an Android phone.
On top of all that, your purchases vanish and your money gone if the company you buy from goes belly-up, or they decides to just discontinue the streaming service.
It's a stupid mess of a system to purchase content.
