(NECRO ALERT) What is the best bottle of rum?

I've never been into rum much, so I have no idea what a good brand to buy is.

So two questions:

What is the BEST rum you can buy (akin to johnny walker blue label etc)?

And, what is the best AFFORDABLE everyday party rum? I guess ~40 dollars???

Well personally I prefer Bacardi 151 for straight drinks and some mixed. However it's too strong to fit with all drinks. Sometimes you need a spiced rum, other times you're better off with white. Depends on the drink. I still tend towards Bacardi, or Capt. Morgans. Maybe not the best, but completely drinkable.

I'm no rum expert, but I know what I like. I dig Captain Morgan spiced rum. Bacardi 151 will get you wasted pretty quick.

My favorite currently is Appleton Estate Rum. We got some on our last cruise and it is very smooth and has a beautiful color to it... granted, it is a dark rum, which I prefer!

Also, another rum I really enjoy is Pussers Rum. Appleton Estate is prety easy to find, Pussers on the other hand is not... (that i could find in MI anyway.)

Tortuga rum from the cayman islands is top shelf stuff. Can't seem to find it in the states.

For every day rum drinking, its all the same.

Ron Zacapa Centenario is my personal favorite and it runs about $40. You usually have to go to a larger store since smaller ones don't carry it. The Mount Gay Extra Old is pretty good too.

The very top shelf would probably be the Pyrat Cask 1623 or El Dorado 25 year old, each running about $300+ if you can find it locally (which I doubt).

Single Barrel Estate Cruzan Rum is where it's at. Although you have to goto St. Croix to buy, i've never seen it in the states.

It's here and a bottle of it usually graces my bar.

You need to go to better liquor stores. 😛

Have to agree with other folks here. Stuff you cant normally get in the US is probably the best.
When I was in the Navy I used to drink insane amounts of Rum.
My overall favorite was Guavaberry from St. Maarten. They also had stuff like Lime, Mango, and a bunch of others.
I always reeked like a silly drunken sailor when we hit any caribbean port, but with St. Maarten being my favorite.

Ron Zacapa Centenario is very good
Pyrat XO is decent sipping as well, not as good as Ron Zacapa.

Appleton Estate is pretty good too.

Best cheap mainstream rum: Captain Morgan

Good classy rum for straight drinking: Anything that is imported from the Bahamas... it's a matter of personal tastes, but it seems to me the less popular names are more of a casual sipping rum.

One more vote for Mount Gay

I really like the Appleton Reserve. When I was in Jamaica a few years ago they only served Appleton and I ended up picking up a bottle of the Reserve. Jamaican rums have a bit of a different flavor than others but I like it.

Capt Morgan is probably the "standard" rum. Can't go wrong.

Know anything about Appleton Estate 250th Anniversary?

My bro got me a bottle of this when he was in Jamaica about 5-6 years ago. I havent been able to find any information about it searching google... I haven't seen it around in any of the bars Ive gone to either.

It tastes darn good though...

Another one here.

Mount Gay is good and can be expensive for aged rum.

St. Lucia Spiced Rum is decent for the price.

RnD Rum Reviews

Zay Gran Reserva & Ron Zacapa Centenario 23 year old got great reviews for inexpensive age rums.

Clément Premiére Canne Rum got decent reviews at affordable price.
