That's... impressive.

Worrying, though, I was much more comfortable with DVD burners costing hundreds of dollars, at least then you felt like you were buying something worthwhile. A multi-hundred-dollar "premium" product taking its sweet time to record a DVD at 1x or 2.4x speed felt like it was accomplishing something. Now.. sixty five dollars, and 16x burn speed - buy the drive, throw in a blank, then OMGWTFDVD!

Good deal, I need more sleep, though.

Dang it, I think I'm going to have to cave in on this one.

Ugh.

Thanks to the OP!

Are the 16x drives as quiet as the 8x? I have one of those (8x) and am totally impressed by its silence as well as its speed.

When mine is burning, I sometimes have to look to make sure it is doing something - but I'm surrounded by computers here, so it may be louder sounding in a quieter enviro.

The movie rip speeds, like all DVD burners, are limited to 2x by the firmware (as a requirement by the MPAA or something!)

The hacked firmware removes this "riplock", but note that you still won't get the full 16x as you need to decrypt too - it's not the same format as regular data either.

As far as external burn speeds I know that firewire is faster but there seems to be two major
chipsets on all external devices prolific and oxford they might make as much difference as
the interface type.
