NEC Super-Multi (AD-7170A) / 18x DVD±R Burn 9.99 AR @ tigerdirect

NEC combined with Sony to put out this drive. Even so, it's the best drive I've ever had. The cooling fan does not spin unless necessary, so playing back media files, browsing the directories, games checking the cd is present, these things do not trigger the fan to spin up.

As tempting as it is, I think a Pioneer DVR-212 is looking a bit more attractive.

<-- has had bad rebate experiences in the past.

Here's the latest firmware for that drive (1.03), for those having trouble finding it:

The release notes recommend to update from Windows Safe Mode. I found that to be necessary, as the flash update failed and locked the drive up. Thankfully it wasn't damaged and the update successfully took in Safe Mode after a reboot.

Thanks for that linky...maybe it will make my drive work...my Optiarc is a pos, I can't get good burns with it, no matter what media I use...I've updated the firmware a couple times and it hasn't helped yet...maybe this firmware will work for me.

I am however the only person I have ever herd of that didnt like his drive...maybe mine's just a bad drive?

If it's anything like the Seagate hoopla I went though, saying things like the "serial number is invalid". During that one I had my rebate rejected three times, when I went to the BBB they told the BBB that they sent a check before the first rejection, after they finally sent a check. So as far as the BBB is concerned, the rebate house "resolved" the dispute and are in good standing.

FWIW -- I'm having a sorta bad experience with this drive .. It will not write to RW+ media .. ( several different brands )

Otherwise it is a pretty good drive..

Onrebate is trying to screw me out of a rebate too. They claim to have deposited it in my paypal account but have not. I asked them to provide a transaction number and they gave some feeble excuse why they couldn't.

how many people have reallied had a bad experience with TD rebates ... or just say they did because everyone "knows" TD rebates are so unreliable?

also i really wanna do this but afraid of the rebates lol

It took over a year and several resubmissions to get all $300 something bucks of my TD rebates back in 2003. I'm never doing business with them..

I've had a dozen or better successful rebates through Tiger Direct or OnRebate.com, as I've detailed elsewhere in older threads, but even this deal isn't worth it after you add shipping. Newegg, ChiefValue, ZipZoomFly, or other resellers have periodic deals on DVD burners for $30 shipped.

That's a whopping rebate to save about $10? No thanks.

Thats very true and waiting a year for the money is already a loss.
