Found a good deal on memory using NEC chips.
Never used them before, are they any good/reliable?
It is specifically a 256 MB PC100 Cas2 Dim.
Cost is $195.00, which seems like a good deal.
They say Athlon compatible.
At website : PCcost.com.

I used NEC RAM in the past, like way back in my 386/486 days when it didn't matter. Personally, I wouldn't use it now. To me, NEC is suck, just because they are responsible for Packard Bell. :|

NEC RAM is just fine. Blaming NEC for Packard Hell's past problems is not going to solve anything. Packard Bell made their own reputation, which NEC is having a difficult time cleaning up.

Touchy, touchy... Lighten up, please. I was kidding about the NEC/Packard Bell thing. :D

Seriously, read any of the various RAM threads on this board. Good luck finding someone spreading the word of the merits of NEC RAM. I am sure it is sufficient, but it's not the best choice for an overclocker, or IMHO, an "enthusiast" user.

Nec makes virtual channel ram which is the fastest pc133 ram although not by a noticable amount.

NEC isn't your problem it is PCcost.com. I HIGHLY recommend that you don't order from them.

I order a "pre tested" 128 meg from them a few months back. After installing it I would get all kinds of weird errors installing windows almost like there was `1 bad memory module on it. Anyway I had to send it back cause it wouldn't work in any of my computers. So I had to pay the shipping then 3 weeks go by I still haven't received my credit back to my card so I call them. They tell me they never got it! So I go wrestle up my ups tracking number and it said it was delivered like 2 weeks ago. So I call them back "there customer support is not 800 btw" and now they say oh there it is in my computer I didn't see that!!! Anyways they refund my money back minus the 17 dollars shipping, WHAT! So I talk to the head guy and told him he better not expect me to pay shipping because they guaranteed the memory to work and it didn't and he basically blamed me for breaking it in not so many words. So after yelling at this moron for 15 minutes he finally agreed to refund shipping. Also I had a brand new computer sitting on my desk for 2 weeks because of them with no memory. They also refused to cross ship the replacement so I could get it sooner they said I would have to send it, then they would process it, then send a new one. That is my experience with BScost.com.

oh btw that price you mentioned is probably not right cause they charge ridiculous shipping fee's as part of there scam.

I have used several pieces of NEC ram. Two pc100 oc/d fine on my via board to 133. I recommend them as a very good second tier RAM. Not on the level as Infineon or Crucial, but a good bang for your buck brand of RAM.

Several people in this thread have spread the good merits of NEC RAM, so I am not sure where you get your info. Besides he asked whether "they were any good and reliable". I belive the answers to both of these questions is yes.

Very good move lordneo99, with more smart consumers like yourself these sad excuses for companies such as PCcost will be dead in no time. Maybe they'll learn that repeat business is important.

Yea, that was after I made my last post. Sorry I couldn't accurately predict the future. :| Exclusive of this thread, I haven't seen NEC RAM recommended by other users of these forums, nor by any of the major hardware sites. That was my point.

I have had to deal with too many people who buy poor quality RAM to save a few $$. It gets frustrating. Because they aren't savvy enough to sort the good from the bad, they get screwed at shows and from buying questionable RAM on the web. I've had them come back to me and say "this system you sold me sucks. I can't get any RAM to work in it." After looking at the garbage they bought and telling them to return it, I offer to order RAM for them or suggest they go get some from Crucial, same thing either way. I guess I am too sensitive about it.

NEC RAM is probably decent. But, like you said they are not at the level of Crucial/Infineon/Mushkin/Corsair. I'd probably never use/recommend it myself. 8 years ago when I first started working as a tech building systems, NEC RAM was something we used quite a bit. I saw alot of chips that were DOA and/or failed in a short time. But, that was a long time ago and QC as well as overall reliablity has increased quite a bit industry-wide since then.

Happy now? I'll try and refrain from joking about Packard Bell ever again. :)

Nec makes the fastest pc133 ram out there. Virtual channel ram is the fastest. As I said before its not noticable but it is the fastest pc133 ram.
