Ok, finally got the drive. I'm not sure what I was waiting for...possibly for the 3540 model to come out so that the 3520A drops in price. But the free optical mouse was the final push.

Good deal, thanks OP.

Damn, mine was delivered yesterday. O well, you live you learn

edit: O btw, I paid $50 total for the drive, so that's a $2 mouse it looks like

What's pi/pif scanning? Can't say that's a term I've heard before

I actually have that mouse and its not bad for a backup. I got it when it was $1 shipped a while ago. I also have the beige NEC 3520 and it is a great drive. Not one single coaster yet!

the updated firware (google it) allows for region free and riplock removal ( so you can decrypt your dvd's much faster)

riplock removal is the best. Made the drive go from 4x (roughly) to about 10-12x
the down side is that the drive is slightly noisier now.. no big deal

I got this mouse for $5 shipped. I really didn't like it. I had problems with it double clicking on a single click, googled it and found others had the same problem. For the price, getting the DVD-RW and the mouse is a good deal, but i wouldn't suggest anyone view the mouse as a deal maker.

I have an older model of the NEC, and I've always found Herrie's firmwhere to be the best

herrie's hasn't been updated since feb 2005 and I can't get this media from shop4tech code name VDSPMSAB 01 to burn faster then 4x reliably
it's disappointing thought. i'd made at least 5 useless dvd-r experimenting with it
But the old 2x from shop4tech in the last year or so burned fine at 8x
There must be a quality control problems with shop4tech media

Correction: The old 2x media from shop4tech can't do 8x either, I had problems reading off it later. its a bad burn :(

The black one with no freebies is $49.99 now with free shipping. Beige one is $50.99 plus $2.99 shipping. :Q
