NEC ND-1100A wearing out on me?

Something has happened to my NEC ND-1100A in the past couple of months. Since the beginning of the summer I have burned around 45 DVD+r's at 4x using Memorex with great results. However, now I have been making coasters and even more annoying is that my burning program's only recognize the burner at 2.4x! I haven't touched the firmware or anything. I'm not using any cracked version burning roms so I don't understand what the problem is. Im using XP SP2 and still on the same spindle Memorex and have tried other media also. I tried using the Utility flasher from NEC but that doesn't even work because the error "Target drive not found" comes up and doesnt recognize the NEC drive...suggestions? Thanks
 
I have upgraded the firmware but the problem still exists...2.4x burning. I'm just about ready to throw this burner out. Does anyone have any suggestions?
 
BUMP... I got Dell to replace my drive with a new Teac 8x burner and now this one is only burning my Phillips 8x media at 4x speed and my 4x Memorex at 2.4x speed. What is the problem? SCSI controller or something? please help
 
Check in Device Manager, that your Secondary IDE Channel (or wherever the burner is located) is set to UDMA.
