I have NEC FE1250+ Black.
Got it for 511$ shipped from Gateway.

I hate it.
I want to return it.

It's focus is not uniform accross the screen.
Corners are great (sharp), but middle (bottom-middle) is really blurry.

Make me dizzy after using it for 10minutes.

Had 753DF before, really love it. Can't complain for 120$ 17" CRT.

Brightness mode is really bright, almost too bright. Especially if you're room is dark.

Don't get FE1250+ Black (or beige, does the color matter?)

I don't think the color matters. They should be identical. The 1250+ is on the low end of what they make. So I am not surprised its not that great. You may want to try playing with the settings though since it shouldn't be totally horrible.

Yeah, I looked it up and it's not the high end model.
I paid 500$+ and I got crap!

That's a lesson I guess, don't expect anything good for 500$... eventhough their on the paper specs are very good!

Any brand and model monitor can be a lemon, and I think you should keep that in mind when buying. Make sure you can exchange if you are not pleased.

Good monitors are getting cheaper. I paid $1000 and it was a good deal on my Nanao F2-17ex 7 years ago and a 21" monitor at that time was over $2000, probably $3000. The Nanao was the best 17" monitor you could buy back in 1996. I just paid 2/3 what I paid for the 17" for a 22" NEC 2141 and it's far better than the Nanao was new. If things continue like that $500 should buy you a great 21" CRT in a couple of years. To me, the monitor is the most important part of your system, no question about it. I didn't know what I was missing. That's a cliche, but a few days ago I had one machine on the 22" and one on the 17". Now I have both machines running on the [EDIT 22" !! Love those dual inputs, and I'm using the USB porting too] and I figure I'll be wanting another monitor real soon, probably a 19 or 20 inch LCD.

Thanks for everyones input...I appreciate all your comments and suggestions...i still need to see them at a store somewhere...that'll be the deal breaker I"m sure....🙂

I don't know where you live but if it's anything like the East Bay No. Calif. area, you might find it tough to get a good idea by seeing them. I've always found it tough to even get to lay eyes on the monitors I've considered buying. Even if you can find them you might not have the chance to do what you want with them. I guess if you press the sales people you might have your way. Usually I see them displaying something pumped through a whole slew of monitors - video or some such. I'd prefer to see small text displayed all over the screen, and of course, have the opportunity to control the machine sending the video signal - change resolutions, fonts.... So far, I bought my monitors sight unseen. I feel like I've gotten great stuff, though.

Yeah, in shopping I have done in KC and Boston its hard as hell to see a higher end monitor. Most places only have 15" and 17" ones on display. They do have larger ones on disaply sometimes but they are usually not the real nice ones. I think I have bought pretty much all my monitors sight unseen due to this. But I usually read a lot of reviews and talk to people 1st so I haven't gone wrong yet.

Yup, that's where it's at. I've done research until I'm confident I'm making a good choice. It's really easier and better, at least with monitors. Now if you were buying a car you could kick the tires and get a test drive, get inside, look all over, etc. etc. But with high end monitors, I haven't even been able to find one out of the box that I wanted.

Yay! Dell sale going on right now. 2070 for $634 and 2141 for $625.

Go get one, ArborBarber!

They're in Dell Small Business, btw.

okay....so if I decide to get the diamond pro 2070sb I won't be making a mistake then? Well, I think it's settled then...I wish I could find a couple of reviews on it though...it seems however, that most reviews are now geared towards LCD's...I'll keep looking for the next week and by then if I haven't heard any bad comments or experiences about this model, I think I'll go for it!
Thanks Muse,Tol, Alptraum and all!

LOL! If you want some "bad reviews" just read this thread. Actually, like I said, I'm very pleased with my 2141. It has one black pixel but honestly I doubt I will ever notice it without looking for it, it's that tiny. This monitor kicks a$$ and if you can get it for $625 shipped, cool. $634 for the Mitsubishi? I'd try that. Maybe they don't have as many lemons. Anyway, Dell will stand behind their stuff and if you get a lemon, RMA the sucker. If you want to reduce your odds of trouble, you could ask Dell to ship Fedex instead of UPS Ground.

Muse...I just came back from CompUsa and Best Buy...like you said there were no real high end monitors to look at...and even the lcd's had ghosting present due to the splitters being used...The guy at CompUsa asked me what monitor I was interested in...I told him NEC/Mitsubishi 2070sb and he started to say that they haven't carried NEC in awhile, that he thought NEC was having financial problems and was having a hard time shippings its' products and that was why they didn't carry NEC any more....yeah ok whatever...needless to say, I wasn't able to get any idea how good monitors looked due to the splitters being used...Best Buy sucked also. I'll have to check Dells' site and see if they have a retail store in my area. I know there is a Gateway country store down the raod...maybe I'll stop by just to get a look at some decent monitors...

Any chance there's a MicroCenter around you? That's about the only place other than the random little shops around here that carries the nicer monitors. I haven't been to my local MicroCenter in a long time...if there is one, maybe you can call and ask if they have one on display.

Tol....Thanks for the suggestion. I'll see if they have a website that offers addresses for their store fronts. Where do you live, East Coast, Mid West or the West Coast? I live on the East Coast. 🙂

There's a Gateway store in my town and I walked in 2 or 3 weeks ago for that same purpose. I found a 19" CRT I could play with. Nobody bothered me and I stopped the program running on it and opened a text file, saved it as another file (test.txt) and filled the screen with text and changed the font to 8 point and inspected it carefully. Conclusion? It couldn't hold a candle to my NEC. That was the biggest CRT they had on display. I walked out.

I found a microcenter but it's a bit of a cruise for me...I also found another site offering the 2070sb in my state about 20 minutes away from me for $719. However I forgot that I'll be charged tax..$45 bucks. So that makes the total $764, but if I can pick it up at their warehouse I might just do it. I also could take a cruise out to PA and pick it up at microcenter....hmmmm
Microcenter has it for $779...

I would just get either the NEC or the Mitsubishi from Dell Small Business as long as that deal is on. $624 or $635 shipped can't be beat. And if it's defective, Dell will RMA and you won't even have to pay shipping. They have a 30 day complete satisfaction guarantee.

My pleasure. Hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine. Something to stoke your enthusiasm - read the last 3 posts in this thread.

It took me a little while, but I ordered my Mitsu 2070SB a couple hours ago. =)

25% off deal that I found in the f@twallet forums got it for me for $512 + tax = $552 shipped.

Let us know how it goes Tol. I am interested in this monitor and would like to hear any opinions about it.

Considering the fact that you were crazy enough to ask about the $1500 monitors, I'm guessing you are like radrd, the guy he recommended the 2141 to, and myself...we want perfection. Like Sonic Death Monkey said, CRT monitors are analog devices. No two are going to be the same, and if you try hard enough you'll be able to find a fault with each one of them.

A few months ago, my local Fry's Electronics had the 2141SB and the Sony G520 sitting right next to each other. I played with them once for about 30 minutes and couldn't honestly come to a conclusion on which had the better picture. I had no display tools available, but both appeared to be perfect in windows apps after a few geometry adjustments. I wish I had a chance to see all the features of NaviSet. It looks like a nice feature from the pics on the website.
Good luck with your new 2070. Fantastic price you got! Regarding Naviset -- what video card do you have? Not a lot of them support DDC/CI, and without it, Naviset won't do much for you. Unless I'm mistaken (and I'm tired of trying), I cannot get it to work with my Ti4200 128 MB BFG Asylum card. I think the Radeon 9700 will work. There's a table at the NEC/Mitsu website that indicates which cards support and which don't support DDC/CI. Anyway, I'm happy with the button adjustments. I'm not going to run out and get another video card just to have Naviset.

I have a 9700Pro...Hopefully I won't have any problems with it. My monitor is scheduled to be delivered between 4/04 and 4/08. Cross your fingers for me that Dell ships it out early. =)
