NEC LCD: a worthy gaming monitor?

I recently bought the following NEC LCD monitor. It seems to stack up well to the best Dell Ultrasharp (lauded by gamers) except it's about 3 inches smaller and almost half the price. The important specs are here:

Response rate: Dell, 16 ns, NEC, 16 ns
Dot pitch: Dell, 0.255, NEC, 0.264 mm

If nothing else, it seems like the NEC will make a decent gaming monitor. Or am I totally off?

and no svideo and composite input. Plus the NEC uses AU Optronics 18 bit panel vs LG Phillips 24 bit panel Dell uses. NEC only display 262,144 colors and use diithering to display 16.2 million colors.

It's ok LCD but no DVI really hurts it along with that 18 bit panel.

I have the version of that monitor with DVI, the 1760NX. I love the monitor, it is great for gaming.

I was going to get that for Christmas.... but on Christmas Eve Amazon.com sent me an e-mail saying there was a mistake and they actually didn't have it :frown:

Where do you get 18-bit? It displays 16,194,277 colors without dithering (unless I'm reading it incorrectly).

Should I just return the monitor and get a good CRT (like the one recommended in Anandtech's high-end guide)?

16.2 million colors tells you it's 18-bit. It really only displays 262,144 colors but use dithering to display 16.2 million. If it was 24-bit it would say and display 16.7 million.

Should you return the LCD? Well it depends. If you like it and it does everything you need to do then why return it as long as you didn't overpay?

Ok, well, what about Samsung's 172x (reviewed in the News section on the front page of Anandtech)? 12 ms, DVI, positively reviewed.

You want a good piece of advice? Stay away from Samsung (preferably, not only LCDs). But their LCDs suck in particular, even though they get positive reviews, I can bet money you wouldn't like it.
Now I know you wouldn't believe me, that's OK. Nobody believes it unless they had a personal experience with Samsung LCDs (or anything for that matter, except RAM modules which are pretty good, but there are better brands and more available like Kingston etc).

I have a DVD player by them. Pretty good. The UI isn't intuitive, but the picture is extremely clear. Don't know if that translates anything to their monitors.

I've heard good things about 172x. Kind of pricey for 17" but looks like it's one of the best 17" you can buy. I really like the look of that monitor. Really slick.

I use NEC's 1860NX (DVI) and I game quite a bit I'm not the kind of guy who's obsessed with ghosting and such but it looks damned fine to me.
