NEC FE991SB Monitor Problem!!

Okay my monitor I think is screwed. I have tested it to see if it with two different video cards, then I tried different drivers. I changed refresh rates, resolutions, and it still does the same thing. Only thing I haven't tried yet is swapping out with a different monitor, but in this case I can already tell its definately monitor that is defective, so there really is no point to swap monitors. It intermittently flickers, and at the top and bottom of the screen sometimes it shrinks the image, and discolors it a bit. I am really pissed, now I have to get a new monitor, and this one isn't even that old. Maybe 3 years tops. I have an 19" NEC FE991SB.

Check out the pics below to see what I mean. I know they are blurry, but I can't get any good pics of the monitor, because of the light it emits, it messes up the pics.

You may want to check the power cord going into the back of the monitor, ensure that it is plugged in all the way (I was having problems with my monitor; not similar to yours however). If it is under 3 years then it may still be under warranty as a lot of manufacturers have 3 year warranties, check the back there should be a date of manufacter as well as a serial number you can use if you call them up. And so you say you tested it, did you change out monitors completely? Did you try lowering the refresh rate? Have you tried other video cards?

Whoaa there.. I have EXACTLY the same problem on my FE991SB!! :frown: So we both now know that the problem IS with the monitor. Mine is still under warranty though, I need to contact NEC-Mitsu (again) for RMA service.

I had this problem like 2 months ago.. emailed and called NEC to RMA my monitor.. but I had to go out of the country so I didn't manage to pack and send it. Unfortunately NEC has discontinued this monitor (and other CRTs) so it looks like they will only repair it, not replace it.,

Well I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one with this problem. And guess what... I just checked the back of my monitor like you told me, and it says the monitor was manufactured in September 2002, and I also checked the NEC warranty, and it is 3 years. So I guess that means I'm still covered!! So thats good news. I'm going to call probably tomorrow or the day after and see what they can do for me. Hopefully I do not need the original receipt, cause if I do, then I'm assed out cause I definately have no idea where that is, or if I still even have it.

Mine is manufactured on Sep 2002 too :Q Looks like it might be a bad batch?

Might be... I just hope they switch it for a new one or fix it, cause I want to buy a new monitor in the future, but I am trying to get this new 24" DELL 2405FPW that is supposed to be coming out soon, and since I do not have the funds for that yet, I need this monitor to hold me down till then. And I do not wanna have to go out and buy a new CRT or LCD just for a few months because that would be a total waste of money for me. Anyway I will call NEC tomorrow, and hopefully we can get this issue resolved.

I have the same monitor, a little over 2 years old. From time to time, not very often, the top or bottom of my screen will vibrate sorta and change size slighty and go back to normal. Maybe it's starting to do what yours' are doing.

EDIT: Mine was manufactured July 2002.

Yep thats exactly what mine does.. It started off doing it very lightly, but now it does it pretty often. And its getting on my nerves. Especially when gaming and it starts to flicker and resize while I'm playing.

I have the exact monitor and it's been awesome. Sorry to hear you guys are having problems.

I have loved this monitor the enitre time I owned it up until this week when it started going wacky. 🙁

But I hope to move to LCD in the near future anyway. I want widescreen 🙂

The drop-off location is about 20 mins drive from my location in Rancho Dominguez/Compton and I deliver it myself instead of using FedEx 🙂

I wanted NEC to send me a box because I don't have mine.. but it will cost me $30 so screw that.. I'll just get someone to drive me there.

There won't be any new replacements since they no longer produce CRTs 🙁

Now my monitor is really screwed, today when I turned it on, there's like constant flickering, and everything gets seriously messed up when I scroll or type, or do anything, IT WAS FINE YESTERDAY. There was a power outtage today, but there has been power ottages before and this didn't happen.

*sigh*...oh sh*t.

EDIT: I restarted my computer and it completely went back to normal, let's hope it stays this way....

Another July 2002 owner.. with the exact same symptoms listed here. I found this forum/thread via google, so sorry if this comes too late. While looking through other google results, I came across this thread posted HERE. The very last post by Andrey, on April 14 2004, 9:07 PM.

And yes the problem is the broken soldering joing in the HV(horizontal/vertical)
deflection cable on the main board. You can barely notice it! Take some multipling glass.
I was near to assemble back when noticed "something". 10 seconds iron soldering solves the problem. My monitor know works perfectly. knock knock knock.

I'm not too comfortable playing around inside of monitors myself. I wouldn't know where the deflection cable is located for that matter, without schematics. Maybe someone here can give this a shot, to see if theirs is the same bad solder joint? It's going to be a PITA to get that main board out though... ugh
