I let this deal go by, primarily because of lack of knowledge on other options. It appeared to me that this was a bare drive w/o any SW. On the surface, that seems to be a drawback if you are just getting into DVD burning.

Second, from the few reviews that I could find, the NEC seemed to be weak on handling any type of "stressed" media. From what I could gather, the Lite-on 812 seemed a better drive, though maybe $15-$20 more expensive. That doesn't seem like a lot if it is a better performer.

Then again, I'm a complete newbie at DVD burning. Hadn't even considered upgrading my CD burners until I saw that you can now "back up" movies

Yeah, went to get another one for another PC and not only is it out of stock, but $15 more now. I went with Nu Tech's DDW-082 BLK for $81. Seems like a good drive, and faster at CD writing.

Spent around $120 for the burner and shipping a while back. Worth every penny and I don't regret paying that because the burner works great. I've been burning Imation DVD+R 4x's @ 6x, which takes about 12 mins for a full disk. I had a 2.4x that took like 30 mins, what a difference!

Being back at $81, ya better grap 'em before they're out of stock again!

Prolly cuz they realized it was cheaper than the LiteOn which only does 8x +R.

Yeah, looks like they're all out of the free -R's. They aren't even listed anymore on the customer appreciation gift list.

I got the NEC burner.

The only thing i saw for addition was some little dvd/cd rack thing. save 9 bucks and the rack thing was nine bucks so it is like a free rack.

So i am gonna be new to the dvd burner scene, any good sites to learn from?

my friend has this and only uses DvDshrink.

thx

DVD Shrink is a must have if you are making backups. Also TMPegnc DVD Author as well as MainConcept MPEG Encoder if you are converting/editing.

I'm new at this also so I'm sure there are other utilities.

i have found a couple of sites

cdfreakz
and
dvdrhelp

do u have any site with a noob guide or something

From what i understand, a dvd can be like 8 or 9 gigs or something. a dvd-blank is 4.7. using dvdshrink u have to compress them to fit onto the dvdblank.

i gotta learn more!

woot some thing new to mess around with
