Yes it can. I got my drive on Friday and I have burned 6 single layer (cheap 2.4x) Khypermedia DVDs that I purchased at OM about 6 months ago becuase they were only 25/$10 out the door. I didn't have a dvd burner at the time but knew someday I would. I burned them as data, not video.

If you were able to do it in Nero Express for CDs, you should still be able to do it with DVDs. Just make sure you change the drive at the top when you're in there, so that it shows your DVD writer drive.

i'm not using express now. now I am using nero 6

Is this drive better than the Plextor PX-712A? I know that it is not dual layer but I can't seem to find any reviews on the NEC.

Just because you set an 8x speed doesn't mean your burner will burn at that speed. It may still burn at 4x. That's what I experienced with my OPTODISK OR8 DVD+Rs.

$15-20 for a single dual layer disc. Yowsa.

/Waiting for media prices to drop, ignore the above comment and please keep buying them so that happens faster. :)

Most definately. Flashed my ND-2510a with Herrie's firmware and supposedly can do 8x on my Princo 4x discs. I only shaved off three minutes(13:something seconds to 10:30-ish). Time to get rid of these Princo discs and use some real media!

Which Herrie FW did you flash to? 1.07 v2 Dual Layer Bitsetting Beta 5? How do you like it?

Mine is on the way. Ordered the "SVR" one. Anyone confirm that it's silver? Saw "Silver" for one of these in an eBay auction so I assumed Newegg must have 'em in Silver too. I ordered "SVR" on that assumption, though I was uneasy because it wasn't clear in the picture. Then I saw this thread and noticed speculation but no confirmation even though some have reported receiving it.

The CD-R Info review isn't so comforting. Is the ability to choose booktype needed if I will be burning more than just data DVD's? Do DVD players simply refuse to read compatible media because they don't recognize the book type? Is this a problem for XBOX and PS2 games also? What situations would I want to modify the booktype and how would I know in advance to avoid making expensive DL coasters?

i figure with 12X burners coming out now, the 8X burners will drop to around $40-50 within a month or two.

BTW, since my order a few days ago @ $77.00 it has dropped one penny to $76.99. Certainly not $1 per day ;) Slowing down? At least it's still falling!

i had both burners and i dicthed the liteon because it is so much louder then the NEC. the NEC is really quiet even when burner, it is amazing to me in that aspect. the only quieter drive i have used is plextor, but those are mad expensive.

Yeah I'm using the 1.07v2b5. It's nice being able to make full use of the speeds capable on certain media. All in all I haven't burned much lately but I haven't spotted any problems with this beta firmware yet either. Not have I tried to use bitsetting on anything.

It's the bitsetting that attracts me most to this FW. Actually, all the features it's supposed to have look appealing:

DL support
bitsetting
Speeded up burns with some media
RPC1
Rip lock removal

What else is there? Actually, the only downside to it that I can see is that it will be seen as a 2500a drive, but so what? I figure that should have no consequence whatever. Actually, come to think of it, there were some issues discussed at cdfreaks.com. I think some folks had their trays come up on reboot or something. I think Herrie fixed that, don't know.

Thing is, I'm going to very soon burn some DVDs for some folks and I want maximum compatibility. I'm new to DVD burning. In a thread someone said that DVD+R with bitsetting FW has somewhat better compatibility with DVD players than DVD-R, which is better than plain DVD+R. So, I figure 1.07v2b5 (with the 2510a) and DVD+R is the way to go. Question: how does the bitsetting work (I haven't installed the FW yet, still have 2.15, the stock FW, but will install 1.07v2b5)? Will DVD+Rs burned with 1.07v2b5 automatically be seen by players as DVD-R? Is there something I set up in software?

Also my question. Do you run the utility before burning and use just any program?

I'm not sure how to set it in Nero if it's possible but with DVDInfo Pro, there is a button at the top that is a disc with +RW layered over it. That gives you a menu to set how +RWs and +Rs are burned, booktype wise. So presumably the settings stick as long as you don't change it

OK, thanks!

What I see is this:
_____________________________________________________
DVD+R/RW BookType BitSetting (RICOH TYPE DRIVES ONLY)
_____________________________________________________

Choose a book type

_ DVD+RW
_ DVD+R
_ DVD-RW
_ DVD-R
_ DVD-ROM

Current Settings

MEDIA TYPE BOOK TYPE

CURRENT --------

DVD+RW --------

DVD+R --------

(Then there's 5 buttons, labeled as seen below)

Set Current Media (DVD+RW only) [disabled]
Set Drive Default (DVD+RW Media)
Set Drive Default (DVD+R Media)
Help
Close

Could anyone explain this? Just in terms of burning DVD+Rs for maximum compatibility with a variety of unknown DVD players that will be used when I distribute a handful of disks to people I know, for instance. Thanks again!

But I thought it requires a dedicated utility rumored to be created by NEC to change the book-type? Lite-On drives use a specific utility too. I need someone to make sense of this for me. As I understand it from the CDRinfo review, changing the book type through other programs simply does not work. So how do I use the book-type utility? Does it override other programs? Do I need to set it before burning and leave the utility open or what?

Oh yeah, when they say OEM, they meant just the player, no screws, no audio cable, NEWEGG is getting cheap. Just leave the fcuking accessories already...
