It's 20$ and you get to keep your warranty.

Seems like WAY to much agonizing research and consideration for 20$

Either way, I'm going to use Herrie's firmware, in order to burn quality media at the faster speeds that they can support. So, the warranty is not an issue either way.

The research is not for saving $20, it's to prevent hours of headaches that come from buying a product that doesn't work properly or fit my needs.

BTW, NewEgg is down to $65 on the beige 2500A.

(Do they refund the difference on price changes that occur prior to shipping?)

If it's about avoiding headaches, then using a hacked firmware doesnt seem like the best idea.

I burned a data DVD+R today with my newly installed stock firmware (2.15) 2510a using purportedly 8x media (I trust this vendor). However, Nero 6 Ultra burned it at 4x. Is there an adjustment I'm supposed to make in Nero, is the disk really 4x media? Or do I have to use a hacked firmware to get 8x burn speeds? It's not a giant problem because I don't expect to be burning a whole lot of DVDs of any kind, inasmuch as the blank media seem to cost 20x as much as blank CDRs. However, since I bought 8x media, I'd like to be getting 8x burn speeds or at least have some idea why I'm not getting them. Thanks for any clarifications.😕

I got mine a week ago. Still useless since NERO keeps telling me the drive is "in use." I'm running NERO 6.3.1.15, too. Read that on the German NEC site, it says that the 2510A requires NERO 6.3.1.16 which isn't out yet. I may have to flsh it so it appears as a 2500A.

How does this drive compare to the new lite-on DL?

One thing I like about the lite-on is that it seems to be shorter, a plus for my matx case.

thanks
With the LiteOn SOHW-832S DL burner you can set the book type to DVD-ROM which will give you much better compatibility with your DVD players, the NEC 2510A doesn't have book type setting so DL disc compatibility with your DVD players could be problem.

odd, Nero took it apon itself to burn some 4x TDK at 6X. on my third disk burned that way and is working great.. I havent tried any 8x media yet

does the NEC have any buffer under-run protection like the liteon? Is the Liteon SOHW-832S a better choice since it have the book type compatibility setting AND is shorter? Length is important since I have a Shuttle computer (shorter is better = more space for airflow). W/ the 2.4x dual layer speed it would take ~45minutes to burn an entire 8.5GB disc correct? Lastly, can the NEC 2510a be set to be region free (is there firmware out for region free?)? Please help me 🙂.

Yes, NEC has buffer under run

You can use DVD shrink (free download) to remove region encoding

Yes, about 45minutes for 8.5 GB at 2.4X

The lite on or the NEC should be fine, can't really go wrong wither way.

IS there a way to force nero to burn at 8x rather than 4x on 4x discs?

My disks are 8x and Nero 6 Ultra is burning them at 4x on my 2510a. Any ideas? Thanks.

I haven't tried them yet, but firmware is available that is said to set the drive region free and also remove the rip lock. Available at http://tdb.rpc1.org/#ND2510A

Edit: I still haven't flashed but my researches indicates that THIS (1.07v2 Dual Layer Bitsetting Beta 5)
is the firmware I will flash. It supports bitsetting, RPC1 and speeds up writing on many disks.

My only complaint with this drive so far is the fact that the tray doesn't respond to a light tap and close like most other drives. It will close if you give it a relatively hard push, and that worries me, so I reach under the tray to hit the button instead because of where I have my case. It's a small matter, but a complaint nonetheless.

The tray seems to function very well for me. I have never been a 'pusher' though, I always hit the button.

After having this drive for a couple weeks, I have to say I like it alot. No complaints, and no coasters with the Ridata dvd-r

The only problem I have is that I want to force nero to burn the discs at 8x. I know on nero express for CD's I could do this, but I can't figure it out on nero 6!

If you were able to do it in Nero Express for CDs, you should still be able to do it with DVDs. Just make sure you change the drive at the top when you're in there, so that it shows your DVD writer drive.
