NEC 870 laser slow printing problems

I have an NEC 870 laser and since using it with XP, the printing speed is awful. It is installed on the parallel port and printed fine and quick back with Win2000 and 98. The printer also has a memory upgrade to 4 MB so the buffer size shouldn't be a problem. When a print job is sent to the printer, basically the computer becomes almost unusable until the job is complete. I have checked all the property settings and everything else I can think of and still the print speed is SLOW. My Epson inkjet on a USB port is faster. I just read on MS's forums about another guy with the same problem with this printer. If anyone knows of any settings/tweaks that can be done to improve print speed I would appreciate any suggestions.
