When I try to burn a CD, the notice pops up saying "no burner detected" Is this a big problem? I know that it has burning capabilities... what do I need to do to fix this? Thanks.

If it helps, the porperties of the burner in "my computer" say it is only dvd and cd-rom capabilities.

Go to device manager and uninstall the controller that the drives are connected to. Right Click->Uninstall.

If you do a "Scan For New Hardware" you can reinstall, or upon reboot, Windows will detect "new devices".

was the answer that worked.

I have that exact same drive. I've never had a problem with it. You should have a "recording" tab under it's properties page in my computer, and Nero identifies it properly as a 3550a for me. I would delete it from device manager and have it re-scan, and/or apply the latest driver.

I tried it w/ windows media player, that's it. I have a copy of pinnacle burner software that I can try... I just built the pc ~1 month ago. I have Win XP home.

Well, I went to properties and tried to uninstall the driver and reinstall it, but this proved unsuccessful. How would one uninstall the WHOLE drive? Would I have to go to "add/remove hardware"?

Another thing: the properties also say "optiarc dvdrw 7170a" Is this NEC's oem?

There are no "drivers" per say to install for any type of optical drive (or HD, floppy, etc.). The OS does this automatically and seamlessly, they all use the same M$ driver. Like for example; a standard ATAPI IDE driver or whatever the interface may be. When I look at my CDROM drive on an IDE port, it says what any other one should say on XP, driver version 5.1.2535.0, same for all of my optical drives on an IDE port. (Now when I look at "Driver details", I never noticed this before, it's showing ROXIO drivers!! This could be because I've been moving all my drives around recently trying to fix my busted POS Plextor, and testing various HD's on other controllers. I removed the ATA > SATA bridge on the back of my 712SA drive and hooked it up to where my CDROM drive is right now, that may be how Roxio drivers got listed for it).

So I think that's why, but if not it could be possible if you use Roxio that it may have loaded drivers for the actual drive itself instead of just the controller. Other 'ware may have done this as well if you did something similar to me.

Any drive's drivers are not going to show in "Add/Remove programs" (my case not withstanding). In your case, like someone above said to do, just delete the drive in the Device manager, you right click the drive and "uninstall". You can also try this with the controller, but I doubt that would help, however it's worth a try.

Did you flash the firmware on your drive? I don't know why it would be showing that "optiarc DVDRW 7170A", but this is interesting: Link

Also check these out: Link

Was yours OEM, or retail boxed by Sony, MadDog, etc.? I ordered a 3550A yesterday and it was actually NEC ND-3550A retail boxed, a hard thing to find.

Are you running the drive on a secondary controller such as a JMicron363? If so, I may have some insight.

it's on the jmicron controller on the MoBo.

Computer: Thanks, I'll try to uninstall it now and report back in a few.

Edit: I bought this OEM from newegg. It came shipped in plastic bubble wrap, drive only.

Edit2: If I hit "uninstall", how would I reinstall it?

Try this:

Go to device manager,
expand the SCSI tree,
right click on the JMicron controller,
select "Update Driver",
select search for driver myself,
select let me choose which driver to install,
and then a list should be available with a couple different drivers. Select "Standard IDE Controller" (or similar) and the hit "OK".

Your drives will now have their recording tab under properties. Check and see if this also corrects the problem with Nero not detecting any writeable drives. Post back if this works.

I tried that and no dice.
All it does is "add" another drive under my pc and that one isn't even a dvd burner. Any other suggestions? Thanks though.

uhm...if your system says it's a 7170 then it is a 7170 unless you pull it out of your system and see the label saying 3550a ...also dl and run nero info tool to get the firmware and other info on the drive..gl

Would you kind enough to please explain the steps on how you did this? NEC's version of the flash, or some 3rd partly like "Liggy and Dee"?

Did it convert it to one of the "Labelflash" drives or whatever it's called? I believe the 3551 and 4551 were these Labelflash drives.
Thanks.

acegazda, you still didn't say how the drive is labeled or if you tried to flash it before.

I had a problem with Nero 6.xx not detecting my NEC 3550a when I first installed it, bought a copy of Nero 7 and problem solved.

I don't think software is the problem considering the properties of the hardware are querky. They indicate a dvd and cd rom drive not burner.
