Got my NEC 3540A from newegg last week but I am having a brainfart trying to figure out why I cannot play a dvd on it and have the sound work. Music cds and other things work well but the Nec cannot play sound from the dvd movie I pop into it. What in the world am I forgetting??? Thanks in advance..

never had to use those....the cd or dvd always worked fine. I can play music cds on it, just the dvd has no sound. Very weird

I think he means "is your sound cable connected".

The sound cable from the back of the dvd player to the mobo? I never used those and no, I don't have it hooked up. That is for analog sound used on pre xp setups. I have xp and digital sound is produced without any cables aside from the ribbon cable that hooks up to the motherboard. With my older dvd burner, the sound worked fine when playing dvd's.....is there a dma setting or something that is for the digital audio aspects of the dvd playback?

You tried installing a different optical drive and see if the problem persists? If it does, that would point to a missing/corrupted driver, bad settings in your movie player, maybe even the OS.
