NEC 3540a $40.99 $2 shipping New Egg

Might have to get it this time since I missed out on the $40.99 shipped at Monarch. Had no funds. 🙁

i'm not sure but in terms of single layer dvd burning quality isnt the 3500A the best, then the 3520A, then the 3540A?

AkumaX: It just depends on whichever drive has the most mature BIOS at the time. I think the 3520A might come out a little ahead because of the burn speed yet the BIOS is still very mature.

Bah couldn't resist. My 4x MadDog burner is just sooo slow and takes about 1 hour to burn a nearly full DVD.

Heh, the MadDog is a Toshiba SD-R5112.
It can only burn DVD-R and probably those RWs, but i know it won't do DVD+R.
I lived with the slow burning for a while, but kinda got annoyed when I started spending my whole day waiting for it to finish. Good thing is I can still do just about anything while it burns. Such as running an adware scan etc.

Free shipping now though, so it's only $1 more than it was earlier.

$1 to an ATHD'er is a show stopper.. 🙂

What I don't understand is this:
Extended warranty is not available for combos or items combined with a free gift.

So if I buy more, I can't BUY the extended warranty? That makes no sense.

Then you have other problems. A full DVD at 4x speed takes 15 minutes to burn, not one hour.

yeah... but does that include ripping time?

I'm just burning an ISO file with Nero. I set it at 4x (max). I forgot what speeds it actually goes at, but it does take about a hour to burn a 4.3gb iso to a DVD. :/
55-60min with some decent multitasking going on. 🙂

ok , i bought this baby and a pack of dvd-r's. The dvd-r's won't read and the drive won't recognize them. Do i need to try the +'s? I'm a dvd burning newb. My impression was that it could handle either one.

It read a dvd fine.

what are the steps you take to backup a dvd? usually its decrypter + shrink + nero

umm if it is empty... it won't read of course...
when you burn something just pop it in when it prompts for it 🙂

Yes I use exactly the way you stated, but sometimes there isn't a need for shrinking, and sometimes the file is downloaded already in iso type.

I don't remember the numbers exactly, but I think at 8x DVD+R for my 3540A i can burn a DVD under 10 minutes. This is a 4.3gb iso also.

I guess maybe I wasn't clear in the past. It took the Mad Dog just under an hour to burn at 4x, a 4.3gb file using Nero. No ripping or shrinking.
Yes it is insanely slow and I don't know why. Maybe it doesn't like the discs as much.

I ordered one last week and I must say, they are really quiet. I was thinking 16x == Loud whiring noise while queing up disks but I could hardly hear the thing. Rock solid DVD burner. I highly recommend it.

yeah, there is definitely something wrong there. it takes me 6min for 16x, 10min for 8x, and 16min for 4x. try a restart and closing all programs? maybe even increasing priority on nero?

Can someone please explain to me what the difference is between:

1. $41.99 and free shipping
2. $45.99, free shipping, and "instant savings" of $4.00

I got deal 1 from Newegg a couple of weeks ago and I'm really concerned about whether I got ripped off.
