I just recently got this nec 3520A and am having a problem. I am using dvd shrink and dvd decrypter to burn the movies at 8x. I am using fujifilm 8X DVD +R made in Japan and the media code is YUDEN000-T02-00. They burn no problem, but when I go to watch them about half way through it stops/stutters and either skips back to a previous point in the movie or skips ahead a few minutes. This has happened on the first two movies I have copied. The dvd player I am using is Sony DVP-NS400D. I tried it in a different player and it worked fine. Is there some kind of setting change I can make or firmware upgrade (it is just the stock firmware now) that will allow me to burn compatible dvd's with this media for my Sony DVP-NS400D? Thanks for any help.
 
Problems like these actually rarely have to do with the drive burning, but moreso on the drive playing the disc. As you said, it worked fine on one and not the other. That tells me that one of your set-top players either isn't very good at reading that type of disc, or maybe the settings you used to encode the DVD weren't quite what the player wants.
 
I would say you should try your burned movies on a couple of friends' DVD players, see if you have the same problem. As for cleaning the laser, never done it myself.
 
Those discs you bought are outstanding quality, & your burner is good too.

It's teh Sony DVD player that's causing the problem.

yep. you will have to use 3rd party NEC firmware and bitset the DVD+R to DVD-ROM when burning movies

Are there any instructions anywhere that show me how to do this? I am a total n00b when it comes to dvd burning.
 
My gf has an older sony set-top dvd player and it often skips, while the same disc in a playstation 2 does not skip at all.
 
I have the same burner and media, the DVDs I have made have had problems in 2 older Sony players (with varying media), while playing perfect on my $60 Philips player (and every other one I have tried).

Lots of info

I actually use the Mad Dog firmware (MD-16XDVD9A2) as it supports bitsetting. If you have Nero, CD-DVD speed will let you change the booktype to DVD-ROM once you have firmware that supports it.
