which one is the overall better choice?
I found them both at exactly the same price
I know a lot of people have the nec and there are over 200 reviews on newegg but the lite-on also has 5 stars and quite a number of reviews

As long as you have the right screw's and some DVD burning software you should be fine.

What about Samsung's DVD Burners, like the (I think) TS552U or something like that?

I think all Chinese in origin. I don't think you will go wrong with either one. Liteon makes many of the drives for other companies.

LOL, I'm so behind on things 'cause they update to frequent.

NEC has both speed and quality. Lite-On has not been doing so well in the past couple of years. Their quality is not on par compared to their past drives.

Get the NEC 3530A. The 3540 isn't available yet - and probably wont be for another couple of weeks.

I would avoid the LiteOn drives like the plague.

Not always the best assumption :)

Everybody recommends the NEC 3520 because it was the best deal on a good burner 4 months ago. That's not the case anymore.

But it's still a good drive. The NEC gets much better burn quality than Lite-On or BenQ drives, so it's definitely the best choice given the options you've presented.

The "lack of performance" that people were referring to is probably that it can't burn 6X DL, it can't burn DVD-R DL at all, and it's really slow ripping movies. The Pioneer 109 is significantly better and about the same price. It was cheaper last week, and now it looks like it's a wallet-bustin' $7 more.
