Nec 3520A dvd burner is slow.

Problem: My NEC ND-3520A burns at an average speed of 2.7x even though I?m using a Ridata 16x DVD-rs.

My failed attempts to resolute the problem:
Checked to make sure the drive is set to Ultra DMA and it was. So that was not the problem.

My failed attempts to resolute the problem: Installed latest version of the NEC 3520A firmware from 1.x to 3.05.

Effect of above: Allows my burn application [Ashampoo Burning Studio] to recognize the max speed of my burner which is 16x. But still burns pretty slow at 2.8x.

Desperate plea for help:
I don?t know what else I can do to fix this problem. I?ve already searched and read a lot of previous threads but none fixed the issue. Thanks for reading.

Cliffnotes:
1. Dvd burns pretty slow.
2. UDMA is activated.
3. Firmwares updated.
4. Still can?t burn fast [above 10x]

Update:
Hooray! I fixed the problem. Here's what i did to resolve the problem:
1. Set region [us] for dvd drive
2. Set Ultra DMA 1 for all drives in system
3. Used Nero Xpress instead of Ashampoo

Result:
1. Burned at 16x
2. Burned 4.2GB at 7min36sec
3. All files are verified.

I'm having the same problem with my NEC 3540A

oh and where did you download the firmware? I can't find the download link

Wow, it looks like this is not a common problem because this product has gotten some really good feedback in the past. So if i can't fix its this week I might reinstall windows and reinstall every device, Oh gawd, its gonna take forever.

My first suggestion is to try some different media.

If that doesn't make a difference, maybe get a trial version of Nero and see if that works.

Are those the only blank dvd's you have? Have you tried burning at 4 or 8x?(Does the 4th cliffnote imply that you can?) Does it burn at the same speeds using different programs? I use a 3520a and still use the stock firmware and have never had any problems with any media I've used yet. I haven't ever used the 16x Ridata media though because I heard as of late there quality is subpar.

Yeah I've used 8x and 4x before and I had the same problem. The Ridata dvdrs are really good, because I tried them on another system and I was able to burn at 12x.
