NEC 3520 started burning coasters (DVDs and CDs)

Leros

Lifer
My NEC 3520 has burned a few DVDs and roughly 30 CDs. I verify every disc I burn. Starting yesterday, ever disc has failed verification. It seems odd to me that I cannot burn either CDs or DVDs. Aren't those two seperate lasers?

Could something else be going on?

Im about to order a 3540, but if I would rather fix this if I can.

first try flashing the firmware like xaeniac said, if that doesn't work make sure your software is up to date.

I tried flashing it with LD3520 1.UF firmware and it said "Could not submit checksum".

I did dump the original firmware, but I cannot reflash it for the same error message.

Now my drive LED is flashing.

Help?

turn off your computer then back on, not restart it. It will clear out some bugs in it if their is any. Then try to flash it. if all else fail then it is considered defective.

What kind of media are you using?

I have the same burner. Works great with 1st class media, not so good with junk media.

Taiyo Yuden is awesome media. See this link:
http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

It's common for the first few discs in a junk media spindle to work fine, but once you get under the top layer the rest are usually junk.

did you buy from newegg? you know you can log in to newegg and check if you see if your burner is still under warranty by trying to submit RMA for exchange only. i suggest priority mail shipping 2-3 days, never has failed me.

I did this. The drive works the same as it did before flashing (or whatever happened when I tried to flash). It burnt another coaster when I tried.

Typically I used cheap Ridata cd-rs. I went out earlier today and bought some Fujifilm CD-Rs and got the same results.

Yah I did. I could RMA it. The last time I RMA'd something it took two weeks to get back. I can order a drive and have it by friday with free shipping.

I just ordered the NEC 3540. $43, pretty good price.

Is the pioneer much better? Its not too late to cancel my order.
