NEC 3500A only showing up as 8x CD-R **UPDATE**

Just tried out my new burner for the first time, and I was only able to burn a CD at 8x on both my Poikosoft and Nero software.

It has the latest firmware (2.18)

I know with DVD's, you need media that can burn at the rated speeds, but these are CD's. I used these same CD's on my last drive, and could burn up to its max (12x) np. This drive is supposedly capable of burning up to 48x on CD-R and 24x on CD-RW.

What gives? Am I missing something?

Cd's are also rated for certain speeds, and it is quite possible the nec3500a does not have an option to burn at 12x meaning 8x is the highest supported speed.

Edit:
I looked it up and the nec 3500a only burns at 8x or 16x or faster(cd-r speeds). Therefore if the media cannot be written at 16x it must be written at 8x. I suggest trying different media.

I guess that must be it, but I find it hard to beleive. Its not like Samsung CD's are low quality, and I've used them for my music editing for a long time. So naturally I didn't think that would be it.

From their website:
Write Speed: DVD+R: 16 max., DVD+RW: 4x, DVD+R DL: 4x,. DVD-R: 16x max,. DVD-RW: 4x. CD-R: 48x max,. CD-RW: 24x max.

If Samsung CD's can only write at 12x max, what kind of golden-cd can burn at 48x? 🙁

Guess I'll be switching brands then.

Anybody need about 1000 Samsung CD's? 😀

even crappy media should do 32, I would think
How old are the Samsungs anyway???
Use sandra to see what DMA mode drive is in
Using 80 conductor cable?
Are you saying it only shows a max of 8X burn option in Nero?

What does Nero info tool say?
What vers Nero?

Thats exactly what I was thinking. I figured even cheap media should get 24x MINIMUM!
The Samsungs are a few years old as I buy aLOT at a time. Upwards of 6000 at a time. But still. I will try a different media as well tonight, but it will still surprise me if they can only burn at 8x.

Nero version 6.0, and 8x is the ONLY option shown. Same thing on my Poikosoft EZ-CD/DA Extractor/burning software (which I use to rip my CD's to my HD......but can also burn).

I'll check with Sandra later tonight when I get home.

First install or update your ANSI layer software (DL from adaptec.com). I know it says for SCSI, but it does fix some weird problems with optical drives - DVD burners in particular for some reason.
Then reboot and update the drive's firmware to the latest version (for media compatibility).
Then check to see if you are trying to burn or copy data from a drive on the same IDE channel in "direct transfer mode - IOW, not buffering the data to a drive on another IDE channel prior to burn. IOW, try to have the source drive on a different IDE channel from the target burner.
. Make sure your burner is recognized as a UDMA or UATA drive (DMA mode).
. Something in there should help.

Got it figured out I think. Decided to roll back the drivers, then update with the newer ones, and it works fine. Just burned a CD at 24x.

Thanks everyone for brainstorming with me.

Which drivers?

I just found some older ones on the net and used those, then re-installed the newer ones. Now I'm only able to burn 32x on 52x media, and was recommended I try TDK's since NEC 3500A seems to be very picky about brands. If that doesn't work, I'm returning it.

i have a similar problem. although not as bad.

dvd's burn fine even up to 16x with the verbatium +r's i got.

however i have some supposed 48x CD-Rs that wont burn past 32x. not a big deal really conisdering i usually burn at 16x or so to avoid errors on audio cd's. however i know the CD's do burn at 48x because i used them in another computer upstairs (also with a nec burner, not sure which model) and they went fine.
