NEC 3500a below speed

I have done everything I can think of to get this burner to burn or even get recognized as a 16x burner. Even the CD-R is seen as a 32x burner, not 48x. I don't know what to do. I have flashed my system bios, updated to the latest NEC firmware, updated my burning app's, and still no luck. I already had an 8x burner, so I feel like I've wasted my money on another 8x burner since that is what everything see's it as. Both Nero and Roxio's info tools Show it as 8x DVD-R/+R. I called NEC and they told me that I have to make sure my burner software supports the drive, so I e-mailed nero, and guess what, Nero has supported the drive since 3 versions ago. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I just got my 3500 for X-MAS. NERO InfoTool shows mine as 48X/48X for CD Read/Write. I only have 8X DVD media so I don't know how to tell what it sees for DVD speed.
