:disgust:

I just spoke with an NEC rebate representative concerning the LCD1735NXM $90 rebate (after I checked their website for my rebate and it could find no info). At first she told me to wait 8 weeks for the rebate to go into the system (I told her it had already been about 6, it should be there). Then she asked where I purchased the monitor, I told her Staples, and she said my rebate would be invalid when the rebate paperwork was processed. There are only 5 vendors that participate in NEC LCD rebates, she said, and Staples is not one of them. I told her I got the rebate form from the NEC site and there was no info concerning valid or invalid retailers, and that I had received rebates from NEC before on items purchased from staples. She said that they do have the list of valid retailers for rebates on their web site, and I was out of luck (despite my threats of Better Business Bureau, Internet Fraud, etc).

What's the next step here? That $90 rebate was the reason I purchased the monitor, I almost sure I got the rebate form straight off their website, and there was no info concerning retailer restrictions. And staples has been valid before. I hope we can complain enough here to get some action. Their rebate phone no is 1-866-327-8350. Website for checking rebates is www.nec.archway.com.

Any chance you can return the monitor? If not, I'd try to take it up with Staples since staples promoted the rebate.

The OP didn't say the rebate was promoted by Staples. OP got it from the web site and assumed it was valid at all dealers. The question is, is the list of valid dealers prominently posted and does the rebate form say "at participating dealers ..."?

Can you post a link to the rebate? I can not find it.
1. You bought it at Staples, contact them first.
2. Write a POLITE letter to their customer service center; it is different from a phone call, it usually get better result.
3. In general, if you have all doucment, BBB is a good place to complain. They might perfer seeing the direct link to the rebate, instead of printed one.
4. This is a long shot, contact your credit card company: you already received the monitor, and it is in good condition; Staples did not post the rebate at their web site, can't image they are responsible for it. However, some credit card company will credit back to you when it is small amount (nobody really like to go throught those long process).

Good luck

The only thing in the rebate that talks about where purchased is

"Rebate applies to listed NEC 35 LCD monitors purchased at an authorized NEC Mitsuibishi reseller. Select monitors available at individula retailers. Offer does not apply to refurbished products. Original UPC symbol from box (or open box tag for demo-unit purchases), copy of dated receipt, and completed rebate form is required for redemption"

The web site has a link called "WHERE TO BUY" and staples is listed .... doesn't that make them an authorized reseller. Plus, I know that in the past NEC themselves (not staples) has honored rebates from Staples purchased goods. If there were exclusions or limited resellers for which the rebate was valid, that should have been on the form.

I can't return the monitor ... it's been almost 6 weeks since purchase. Staples did not promote the rebate ... this was an NEC sponsered rebate. Staples themselves had a $50 rebate on the monitor. Total price after rebates and tax was about $200 (just before big drop in LCD prices, was a super buy).

I talked with another rep, he had me to resubmit the paperwork, but he's not sure if it will be valid or not. Odd that my rebate never even showed up in their system. There was a 4 page post when this deal was out ... I'm hoping this affects alot of A-techers .... if a lot of us complain maybe they'll honor the rebates.

Yeah, I took advantage at Staples.

They had better honor the rebate as it did not exclude Staples.

Do you have a link to the rebate? I would like to save a copy for documentation.

Thanks.

I recall at least one instance when a rebate on a site like PCMall was being promoted in this forum as something you could apply to a NEC monitor at Staples. Don't know if this is a result of that sort of thing but it struck me as very risky at the time that the big rebate wasn't listed on the Staples site.

I called and spoke with a supervisor, Cliff S. He said that all he could do is give me a number to contact Staples about it and basically said that it was sufficient to say that Staples was excluded by saying the rebate form stated "authorized NEC resellers" which he says Staples does not fall under. When I asked how a consumer is to know this information, he had no reply other than the offer of the Staples phone number. Again. I asked for a number for someone else at NEC above him and he basically said it stops with him. Somehow I doubt the validity of that statement considering he is manning the call center.

I am currently filing a complaint with the BBB. I recommend that everyone affected do the same.

I. am. so. pissed. right. now.

i dont think the $90 rebate was offered by staples, i think someone found the rebate form on another site and just assumed it would work. i almost jumped on the deal too since the price was awesome after the $90 rebate. im glad i didnt. also, if anyone needs more info, this is a link to the original thread about the sale and the rebate from january.

edit: the $90 rebate came from pricegrabber, not from staples.

There is a whole lot of people involved with this rebate. The original rebate did not exclude any authorized resellers. (I believe Staples is an authorized seller for everything they sell) As time went on, Nec updated the form to exclude Staples. They could be nice and sent out the rebates, but they will probably reject them and have a bee's nest heading their way.

Here is the letter I sent NEC which is basically what I wrote to the BBB.

________________________________________________________

To whom it may concern:

I purchased this monitor with the understanding that it is eligible for a $90 rebate from your company. See http://www.compuplus.com/fpage/NECREBATE.pdf for an example of the rebate offer. Nowhere on the rebate form is Staples excluded from application. In fact, the only limited language on the rebate form states that: "Rebate applies to listed NEC 35 LCD monitors purchased at an authorized NEC-Mitsubishi reseller." On the NEC website Staples is clearly listed as a reseller, see http://www.necmitsubishi.com/wheretoBuy/Retailer.cfm . When I called you company today and spoke with the supervisor on duty, Cliff S., he stated that Staples does not qualify as an "authorized reseller." Apparently your company expects consumers to have some sort of clairvoyant ability to glean this information in spite of the fact that the rebate form does not limit its applicability to any certain stores and that Staples is itself listed as a reseller on NEC's website.

This is a deplorable practice and I would like to receive the rebate to which I am entitled by the purchase of this monitor. If your company would like to limit the application of its rebates, I suggest that it write such limiting language on the rebate form. I know I am not the only consumer that has been burned by this deception and I hope your company takes the proper remedial measures. Please forward this correspondence to the proper party if this is not the proper body.

Thank you for your time.

Does anyone even show their rebate as processing when they go to the NEC rebate site? Even if the rebates aren't valid, shouldn't they at least be in the system by now? Somethings not right about all of this.

Venne ... I resubmitted my rebate paperwork with an almost identical note.

Also --- wasn't a link to this rebate right on the NEC website, at the NEC 1735NXM product page? I think that makes a difference in this argument ... if NEC had it on their site, I think they're much more liable for the rebate.

I couldn't find the rebate on the website. Apparently Staples rebates are different from all other resellers. Here is the communications I am currently having with NEC customer support. . . .

Dear Mr. Venne,

Thank you for writing regarding your NEC computer monitor. Rebates offered through Staples are actually handled separately from all other resellers. You may contact the proper department at (866)765-5696. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us for further assistance.

Sincerely,

Justin Pendleton

E-mail: techsupport@necmitsubishi.com

To which I replied:

Justin,

How is a consumer supposed to know that the rebate is handled through a different avenue? Are we supposed to be aware that Staples is specifically exempt from your offers? I assume that the number you gave me is the number to Staples with which I do not have any complaints. I have a complaint with NEC/Mitsubishi.

I would like the rebate that I satisfied honored. I have filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. I do not think it to much to ask that your company honor its offers, especially since this is six weeks after my purchase and I cannot return the product because it has both timed out and the UPC code is in your company's possession. I feel I have been taken advantage of as your company received the benefit of my purchase while I did not receive the benefit of the rebate which induced my purchasing decision. I actually had purchased a Samsung monitor which I returned so I could take advantage of the rebate offer. Furthermore, the case of my monitor was slightly warped and I decided not to exchange it because I wanted to make sure I filed the rebate form as soon as possible. It was more important to me to receive the $90 rebate than have a perfectly performing product. Your company received the benefit of the bargain and I did not. This is not fair dealing and I contest your company's practice.

Best Regards,

ME

100% accurate, I actually bought the Samsung 19" CRT and then returned it when I found out about this, now not so good, deal. And the monitor is slightly off on the upper right side of the casing.

ROFL- Not sure if this is the tact I would take but I like it.

Here is another number to call. Per my correspondence with Justin:

You called the wrong division and they are correct in saying they cannot help you. Who gave you that number to call? You may call NEC/Mitsubishi at (800)632-4662 to file a complaint, but we do not process rebate requests. You may call rebate headquarters at (866)765-5696.

As per rebate form

"For rebate status visit www.nec.archway.com or call 1-866-327-8350 7AM - 9PM central standard time".

I sent an e-mail through the NEC website, customer service page. Never saw Justins name pop up though. The 2 times I called that number, the reps never told me I had the wrong number .... they acted like they were the people to call concerning rebate problems.

Just saw this thread last night.....I was the OP on the deal in the other thread. Have not heard yet from NEC but will call them for sure. Got the rebate form from Pricegrabber and verified on NEC site that Staples was an authorized reseller. Don't what else we could have done to validate this! This Archway Marketing Services looks like some sort of mega-fulfillment company! (maybe the Umbrella Corporation!) Rebates and premiums is just one of their "services".

From www.archway.com:
------------------------------------------------------------------
Consumer Rebates & Refunds

Millions of checks....billions of dollars processed annually

Handling simple and complex offers, low to high value
Advanced fraud and security controls
In-house order validation and data entry
Sophisticated duplicate elimination processes
Print personalization
Digitized logos and signatures
Flexible banking options
Web-based promotional reporting
Full-service customer service
Personal consultation for all projects
-----------------------------------------------------------------

I think they'll have to explain where this rebate came from and why it's not valid at an authorized reseller.
