Do you have links to any reviews? Hrm, Do they have any of these types of drives in the SCSI format?

HOPEFULLY plextor will make one soon, I'm hoping plextor will at least make an IDE version soon :)

I've got this drive and it is awesome. Highly recommended. I think over at VCDHelp.com it has something like an 8.5 rating. Anyways, I've never burned any coasters with mine and It's reliable.

Yeah, this is a hot deal. I bought the Cendyne 4x DVD+R/RW (same as the 1100a) through Staples about a month ago - had to jump through hoops to find the coupon, and now I'm waiting for rebates. The end result? $144 and change. For about a minute's worth, you can get the same drive without tax/rebates/coupons.

Just like jrutz, I have also had the CenDyne drive for a while now, and it is just PERFECT - it is actually the very same drive that is being sold by bigger brend names like HP and TDK after rebadging and repackaging. CenDyne just packages them in their boxes without any rebadging - here are a few links about the drive:

CenDyne Part number: CDICD00225
NEC Sweedish Site ND-1100A Page
ND-1100A Detailed Specifications(PDF)

All in all - A GREAT BUY !!!

not really, the dvd writers out now are only single layer which means they only use one red laser to write everything whereas most dvd movies are dual layer and they use a blue laser as well, so you can basically hack the movie onto two dvd discs and use software to make it work and put in menus to switch discs and stuff like that, but I think it's fairly obvious that this isn't the way of the future and that there will be dual layer writers...

all current dvd drives uses red laser. the only blue laser dvd drive cost around $5000 from Sony and it's only available in Japan.
next gen dvd tech will/could use blue laser. but, hd dvd format is still being fight by diff companies.

I just got one of these (about $138.xx) with one of the posts in AT for the Staples deal.
Also got the 4x DVD+Rs pie plate and a 10 pack of 2.4x RWs at the target (also posted in AT) deal.

The TDK 2.4 disks burn at 2.4 under Nero (even though all over the Cendyne box it said only 2x).
The 4x burn as 4x! What more can you want? No MIR, no coupon to fiddle with?!!! You'd be crazy not to jump all over this!.:D:D:D
More than two thumbs up!

So can this drive really be updated through firmware to support both + and - burning? Or is that just an Urban Legend? :)

NO - Currently not possible.

Just a firmware to change it from RPC2 to RPC1 (region free).

That plextor is really the NEC 1100a so save yourself the money. I have the NEC 1100a and it works great.

Since NewEgg.com charges tax in CA (which would bring the price up to around $160), ateck.com also has the drive here for $156 after FedEx Super Saver, and they're based out of Jersey, so there shouldn't be any tax.

there are tons of them on ebay, from people who pulled them from dell systems. costs about $150 there too.

i just got my nd-1100a from the tiger direct deal. very happy with the purchase. since it seems that + will win, no need to spend $70 extra to get a combo one.

and using freeware dvd shrink and nero, you can make dvds in 45 minutes.

Well I jumped on board for $156.15 after shipping. Not a bad price. Hopefully the burner will arrive this week and I'll get to start farting around with it! Hot deal... thanks!

Got the burner yesterday, installed it this morning. Plugged right in with XP Pro, no issues.
Burned my first "backup" DVD. Did 4X on TDK media without a hitch. Quiet drive, works great!:D

This is now down to 129.99 (+ $5 shipping). Don't know if this merits a new thread or not. I'm guessing not.

It's a OEM drive which means, NO warranty, software, manual or media.

BTY: you can get a retail Mitsumi (rebadged NEC 1100A) Internal 4x DVD+R/+RW at Outpost.com for $129.99 no rebates. LINK

They have the retail TDK Internal 4x DVD+R/+RW for $199.99, but you can get it for less by having Staples PM the $199.99 price, staples has it for $249.99 with a $50 MIR, add a $30 off $150 coupon to bring the price down to around $115 AR.

They also have a External QPS 4x DVD-R/-RW USB 2.0 drive for $179.90

NEC has made excellent drives for a few years now, I prefer them over most any other OEM. Samsung makes good burners as well I wish they would jump into the DVD burner realm though.
