humm they banned our beef based when there was no danger to consuming American beef, so why not do the same to them when their defective products have killed 50+ people.

As if the Japanese didn't already suspect that our new found zealoutry about car safety wasn't just protectionism in disguise, now it's been made perfectly clear.

Nebraska Senator Mike Johanns (R) says the US should look into banning Japanese car imports until all the safety issues have been worked out.

Johanns, who as USA Today notes used to be the Agriculture Secretary during the beef import ban, likened such a move to restricting tainted meat from foreign countries.

Banning them? That is throwing out the baby with the bathwater. How about enacting similar import restrictions/taxes that the Japanese impose on our vehicles? That should be sufficient. I see no reason the recent recall issues should affect trade between the US and Japan.

Yeah, I'm 100% confident that was not said to be taken seriously.

But, in this day of hyper-partisan news...

Stupid idea. But not surprising. Nationalism always works best during tough times.

Actually I saw him interviewed yesterday and you are correct. He was really making a point regarding the Japanese restriction of beef imports from the US and was not seriously expecting to banning the import of Japanese autos.

And how many American jobs would go down the drain if this idiot had his way? The Japanese run plants in Ohio, Tenn, Kentucky...

Even if American brands had a perfect safety/recall history, this would still be incredibly stupid coming from a political party who loves to espouse the wonders of a free market.

Starting to think the (R) stands for retard... Someone in the RNC needs to gag that fool.

There as no way to assure the safety of American Beef. Mainly because the US had an excessively lax Testing Program. To say that there was "no danger" is disingenuous and likely simply wrong.

*whew!*

Ok, that sounds less stupid, but still is worrisome due to Japan being an important ally of ours. That he's reliving the beef recall now makes me wonder just how much GM and Ford sent his way.

I heard on the news that the cause of the Toyota gas pedal recall was due to a part manufactured in Indiana. Is this true?

the fact that the guy is from nebraska, where there is basically nothing but agribusiness, should have clued you in.

there are still heavy restrictions on US beef sales to japan.

ftfy. CTS parts in other manufacturers' cars don't seem to have issues.
