Saw this earlier today at my local Office Depot.

Magellan GPS Companion module on clearance for $104.99 down from $149.99.

At checkout a $50 rebate prints out so your total cost comes down to $54.99. I guess some of you have access to coupons which can bring the price down even more 😀.

Not bad for an item marked down from $149.99.

You can read more about this HERE

I would like to know if anybody on this forum have used this item...is this a gimmick or is it actually useful?

I think I'll go and check out my local OD for this. I got a visor on a deal a while back and I always thought it would be cool to do something with the springboard. Maybe this will make me use the visor.

The software looks cool. Based on the reviews of this product on CNet it is pretty good except that you can't put in an address or something like that.

I like my Magellan, I got it a while back for $90 after rebate and coupon and while I can count on my fingers the number of times that I needed, it was immensely useful during those situations. In the Los Angeles area I can usually get a 3D sync in about 30 seconds with a clear and open sky, which is more than you can say with some other Visor GPS units.

Just a note though, the included software seems to have a little glitch in that it's about 100 ft behind. You could drive pass an intersection for about 2 seconds before you see the dot on the Visor crossing that same intersection. It's not too big of a deal, but it can get annoying as you constantly have to make compensations for it. Also, for the sake of others on the road, please don't use this if you are driving alone on the road, always get a passenger to give you directions.

The unit is also NEMA (sp?) compatible, which means any other map software that supports this standard will be able to work with this unit, so if you don't like the map and software included go out and look for another that does.

Anyone else here have first-hand experience with this GPS unit? If so, please let us know what you think about it.

Also, how different is it using this Handspring Visor GPS module as opposed to a stand-alone GPS device?

I bought this during lunch yesterday at Staples. Staples.com has it listed at $111.75, but it is out of stock for my area. I was able to print the web price in the store and price match. So, it was about $61.75. I didn't use any coupons because they have been getting tougher each time and I was already getting a killer deal, so you may be able to get it for even less.
So far, it is a lot of fun. The maps are out of date. An update to the programs is available at Magallengps.com. I am thinking about buying an updated map for my area at Mapopolis.com. They are available for about $10 each or you can get a yearly subscription. They have trial maps without GPS, so you can see if you like the maps.

Idahoski, how did you get the $50 rebate if you bought it at Staples? I thought that the rebate printed out at the register when you bought it from Office Depot?

Sorry, I didn't read the original message that closely. The rebate is available from Magellan's website and is listed on their home page:
Rebate Link

So, you don't have to buy it from Office Depot. I don't have an OD here and Staples.com had about the best price and the B&M will price match. Amazon.com has it for about $135, which is still a pretty good price after rebate. I am assuming that Staples is a participating retailers, but plan on double checking.

Went to my local OD last night. Out of stock.
Out of stock at Staples in my area too.

Dang so much for an inexpensive GPS and a use for my visor.
Good deal though.
BTW: The rebate can be found on Amazon too (I was reading reviews there and saw the rebate form).

I just called my local OD and they have *1* left in stock. WOOHOO!!!! 😀

They have it on hold under my name so I can snatch it up tonight after work. They told me it's $100! After tax and MIR, it'll be $56. OD has all their Visor accessories on clearance 'cause they don't carry the Visor pda any longer.

The timing of this thread is funny 'cause I'd just ordered the Nexian GPS Module $103.39 ($93.39 with coupon) from Amazon's last Friday sale. I'm sure they've already processed my order but I will be returning it. The Magellan seems to be just as good if not better.

<< Bump for klee58 😀 >>

Thanks for the heads up RossMAN, you're a sweetie! 🙂

~EDIT~

Not only do they have 1 in stock at my local OD, I called up my nearest Staples (I have 4 near my house) and they have 2 in stock too, but OD has it for $11 less so they win my business. It's great to live here. 😀

I tried buying it online to MA, NY, WA, and TX and all showed out of stock!

This is a good deal if you can get it online with a $20 off coupon, and then the $50 rebate. $41 or so total.

Does anyone have a printable version of the $20 off they could share with me?
