Nah, that'd be the DOT's job, to paint the hands on the road around it. That'd be a fun project for some pissed off road crew worker, to paint that on what would become his last day.

Swastika /= Nazi

Yeah it's not like the Japanese would ever have anything to do with the Nazis. That would be absurd.

It's a Buddhist symbol long before the Nazis came to be.

Is your sarcasm meter broken or do you just like stating obvious facts?

It doesn't matter what it originally meant, it's come to by synonymous with Nazis. It SHOULDN'T be, but remember that 90% of people on this planet are retarded.

If I opened Agentbolt's Hardware store, and decided the sign out front would have a big ol' Swastika, I'd get run out of town on a rail, most likely by the government itself. Regardless of whether it's a harmless symbol in a vacuum, putting one on a manhole cover is weird.

Whoa there. It has nothing to do with being retarded. Everyone with a high school education knows that the swastika was used in Buddhism and Hinduism first. We associate the swastika with Nazis because of their use of it as their main symbol, and there is nothing wrong with that. Genocide, world domination, and total evil eclipses some superstitious "good luck" nonsense.

To put it another way, are 90% of idiots because they associate the cross with Christianity even though it's also a Native American symbol?

they were just allied with them in world war two, not like that was important or anything.

Yeah it was nothing. That alliance was just because German women weren't willing to do bukkake.

In Japan people aren't like American's on things.

Some cities in the US have neat manhole covers too. Can't remember which ones I have seen though.

But just for the record, Buddhism is one of Japan's primary religions.

Between it and Shinto about 9 out of 10 people in Japan...A lot of people I talk to think the Japanese are primarily Christians though.

thats what i meant. the nazi symbol looks like two S's. its the easiest way to tell the difference between the buddist version and nazis.

There is no difference. The Buddhists use both the right and left facing Swastika's.

perhaps, but most i've seen are backwards :p or mabye they doing it on purpose to get away from the nazi symbol which is never backwards.

What's the purpose of manhole covers as art? The government already wastes too much of my money on idiocy without resorting to that.

You're Japanese?

In any case, you are missing the point. Nice looking manhole covers might seem like a waste, but it probably pays off in the end, just like any other beautification effort.

Japan isn't really a religious country. Saying that Buddhism and Shinto are 90% of Japan is a huge misrepresentation IMO, regardless of how many people identify with those religions culturally.

The religion numbers on the census don't show it, but 65% of Britons are atheist. I don't have any data but I suspect Japan is the same way.

Sad news out of Japan today: Child run over by speeding truck. Bystanders say kid was just standing in the middle of the road, staring at the ground, paying no attention to traffic.

My wife and her family are Japanese. She is the only one in the states.

She doesn't believe there is a god or not...more agnostic than atheist though.

Where the frig did you pull 65% for Britains are atheist...try closer to 1/4 that.

jesus.

Most people that see swastika's here are those our media shows in a certain way...not the way it was originally intended.

The swastika really doesn't apply to almost any american, but they will defend the hell out of it without knowing about it really.
