Neat little article in the Chicago Tribune on distributed computing projects

The Chicago Tribune ran a neat little article on distributing computing projects. I laughed when they interviewed one guy who runs the Folding client on seven computers. Oooooo!!! The reporter should have interviewed MadMurph or Markfw. 🙂

I guess you could drill a bit bigger hole in a CD, jam a candle in the hole and open up the tray on the 'puter and slide the "candle holder" in the tray!😛

I agree - having 21 comps spread around the house, planning to build the 22nd, heating the house with those comps - that is way beyond "quirky".
It is a tremendous amount of fun! 😀
Mad scientist? Why not. Especially considering that quite a few of the DC-bunch are academically active scientists in life sciences, physics, chemistry and - I would guess - all other branches of science; while quite a few others contribute just for the cause and fun of it!

I like Dr. Pande's final comment:

"A pregnancy takes nine months, but you can't get nine women together and get it done in a month," he said. "Some problems can't be divided."

At least my wife wished some times during her pregnancies it were possible... 😉

Btw A Stanford University protein study called Folding@home now gets the majority of its processing work from the consoles

Last I heard, the consoles were still very limited in what kind of science they could do, albeit what they can... is FAST.

A majority of the work? Not even close. unless he means the console client (CLI) .... instead of gaming consoles (PS3)
