Well i desided to reaply thermal paste on my athlon XP, firstly i nearly snaped the mobo trying to take the darn heatsink off.

Cleaned it all up and aplied new thermal paste, put the hfs back on, turn on the computer its shows me the usuall text about the gfx card bios then it just does nothing, so i try it numerous times to restart it, cleare cmos etc, still nothing, moved the heatsink, no difference.

At that point i really though i killed the darn thing, take of the hsf and realise i was only making half comtact with the cpu, seen from the imprint on the thermal paste .
So i reattach the heatsink, thinking the cpu is fryed and volla it still works, hah thats gotta be the closest i ever came to burning something in my comp. idel 32C load 45C this is with a tiny little stock heatsink :)

And also, how would this athlon compare to a sempron 2600+, if anyone has that sempron i wouldnt mind doing some benchmarks agains them.

I wanna use this comp for a fileserver + gaming server for something like 5 comps. Will it be too slow for that? as i havent seen the requirement for never games.

Comparing to socket A Sempron is easy. Just compare their true clockspeeds and the faster true clock = faster performance. Comparing to socket 754 is trickier, but I'd think that at the same true clock speeds, the socket 754 chip would be the overall better performer. Your 1700+ runs at 1.46GHz so that's comparable to the Sempron 2500+ for socket 754, though I'd say the Sempron would still be faster overall. Any other Sempron for socket 754 would be faster.

For fileserver use, your CPU should be great. For gaming server, what games? Also, I don't think it worth having a dedicated server for such a small LAN.

Well it will be used for freelancer, that requires a server to be set up, (maybe will make it avalable outside lan) and it would be a pain to keep it on the comp that ur playing on. What about newer games, BF2 etc. I know that requires lots but say how many player will the 1700+ be able to handle?
