It sounds excessive to some people but... I could use a lowly one for downloading things, whilst keeping my other power computer free. some of the downloads I make are a bit... erratic... and sometimes I have to do quite a search for what I want *cough*... it can be difficult to manage this not in front of the computer. I could play a game whilst keeping a proper eye on my downloads. or playing a game with walk-through guide web pages on the other computer. wheee...

I have three computers in the same room, sometimes four.

1. My machine
2. My girlfriends machine
3. The P200 server
4. My company laptop when I bother to bring it home

all are able to connect to the in house network that I have... it was funny last night my girlfriend was having trouble printing something rather large on her small HP printer...in a fit of rage she screamed "why does everything have to be so connected!!!" I laughed, sometimes it sucks to be into computers :)

Travis,

I like your idea. One for downloading, the other as the main box. Good idea. My PIII 550E is collecting dust as we speak. All it needs is a NIC card. I already have a Gateway/Router. Hmmm. But that would mean I'd have to have a second monitor hooked up as well to see what the heck is going on w/that second pc.

Darn! Every time a good idea pops up, something goes wrong. I have a second monitor. Decent one too...the one that came w/the Dell. Yesh, I admit...my first pc was off-the-shelf  Never again though. I don't have room for a second "whole setup". My pc desk is rather small. Mainly because my apartment is a roomy shoebox, but that's another story.

Oh well, it was a great idea and I was happy for the two seconds it took to realize I don't have the room for it. Anyway, great idea, Travis!

You could always get one of those switch boxes so you would only need 1 monitor, keyboard, and mouse to control both computers.

Pakman,

Hmm. That's an idea. Don't those degrade performance or response time or something like that, though?

my sisters celery500 and my rig. i could potentially have 4 computers if i assembled them all together [i have a 1ghz tbird just sitting there on a kt7]. anyways, they are hooked via 16 switch sharing a 26.4 connection. great huh?

You know what, I don't know. I've seen one before but never actually used one. I would think it would have minimal performance hit, but your image quality on your monitor might not be as great.

I've got four, my main system, a server, my 'play with os's' system, and a an old k6 that runs seti 24/7 for no particular reason other than it's not good for anything else.

All in my bedroom, though I've plenty of room elsewhere. I've just gotten used to sleeping with the white noise from 20ish fans...

Pak,
Yeah, I was thinking about image quality as well. I'm really big into how it looks; as most of us here are, I'm sure. Good idea though. Hmm...I could convert my 6x8 dining area into my office and eat in the bedroom....;) Oh well, some other time then.

Double Hmm.....I could (just a though) build some kind of shelf into the wall, mount the monitor there and .....nah.

I've got three computers hooked up through a KVM switch (the piece of hardware that lets you use one monitor, mouse, keyboard for all the computers) and I've never noticed a slowdown or anything like that. It switches on the fly between the computers and only takes about two seconds for the monitor to resynch itself. Sure beats having three monitors around, believe me.

I?ve got 4 running right now, 1 for games and burning (Win98) 1 for office type apps, (W2k) and the other 2 just do RC5 at the moment. Gathering the parts for a 5th. Use a KVM on the main 2 and VNC to control the 2 RC5 boxes. All networked of course
