Well I'm interested in hearing about major events regarding it, but I don't give a damn about another anthrax scare because they are ALL over the place. All the anthrax stories seem the same.

Would you believe in all this we've had what, one casualty because of it? I don't want to undermine the severity, but this is NOTHING compared to how bad smallpox could be.

Sign of the times of the 30 minute TV show, video game generation.

If it isn't solved or finished in 30 minutes it gets boring.

Sorry but real life isn't like that.

Yes because it's probably just a distraction to draw our attention from something else they have cooked up.

i'm in FL and my community college freaked out yesterday. they got something "suspicious" (it was probably just from Jersey, but...) they called the hazmat team to come by and look at it. the hazmat guys were on the scene of another suspicious package across town, raced over, checked it out and then went back to the other anthrax scare.

honestly, this is getting ridiculous. it reminds me of the tylenol=cyandide thing in the 80's where everybody freaks out at the littlest thing.

i wonder what would happen if someone happened to spill baby powder..............

I read this somewhere and found it interesting. What do you guys think?

A quick note about Anthrax

In the effort by the American media to keep the American people in such a high state of terror that they cannot objectively think about what is going on, the threat of another terror attack using Anthrax is being constantly waved about the TV screens, indeed has been a staple of media fear mongering for some years now.

But contrary to the popular myth, Anthrax is not a good terror weapon at all. It was developed by the United States (which still holds the world's largest stockpiles of weapons grade Anthrax) as a battlefield weapon, because there is no possibility of runaway infection.

Anthrax has no secondary communicability. People who have the disease cannot give it to others around them. One must be directly exposed to the spores to get the disease. This makes Anthrax a great weapon to use to cripple an opposing army, because ONLY that army thus sprayed will get sick (tying up additional logistical and medical resources to keep them from dying). To use Anthrax effectively requires large numbers of delivery systems, something a terrorist would not have available.

Real bio-terror (as opposed to a staged fake incident) requires a pathogen with a high secondary communicability, so that a target group infected with it proceeds to infect more people around them, spreading the disease without additional effort on the part of the terrorists.

Therefore, Anthrax is a poor choice for real terrorists to use, but a great choice for someone planning to stage a phony terror event.

One more point; our armed forces have been given mandatory immunizations against Anthrax. Given that there are dozens of alternative pathogens which could be used by terrorists, I wonder how our government is so certain which one will be used. And won't it be lucky when the terrorists use the one infectious agent for which our military is already immune?

POSTSCRIPT: In comparing the smoothness of the attacks on 9/11, versus the sheer ineptness by which Anthrax was used in Florida (single victim only), it is apparent that the party that used the anthrax is probably not the same party that planned the attacks in New York. Initial reports are that the Florida Anthrax came from a lab in Iowa.

The U.S. Department of Defense claims that a gram of anthrax material contains 100 million lethal dosages, but their claim has always been controversial.

EDIT: A gram of anthrax material contains a trillion spores

People got sick and tired of hearing about Polio too, untill it came to epidemic proportions. Dont panick, but hey, it could spread to something you WILL want to hear about later, especially if you are the one affected.

Yes, and those unfortunate few, they have the rest of the Americans running around with their heads cut off b/c they think that a small bug bite is Anthrax
