NE deal- HP Xeon E2-1240

thinking of getting one of these to replace my aging AMD PII 6-core system which generates so much heat in my office I have to have a fan blowing cool air in from the hallway! Comments/suggestions before I pull the trigger? I do have a Crucial SSD and a ASUS 6850 vid card I can reuse.

Pretty decent deal though I am unsure what kind of impact it will have on ambient temps and a word of caution, the Z210 is very picky with RAM.

I've been running the e3-1245v2 version of this chip, think of it as a non-overclockable version of a 2600k.

Thanks... Yeah, the PII 1075T is a 125W chip but the heat problems come from the NB which runs extremely hot- like 62dec C on the heatsink and probably the 6850, which I don't need since I really don't do any gaming anymore. But still, I would think the 1240 would be at least 2x the speed of the 1075T. 8GB of ram should be fine- especially with a SSD. Would I be able to do a clean install of Win7 on the SSD and use the HP OEM lic?

Actually, after looking at some old reviews, it isn't really that much faster than the 1075T- 50% in some of the single threaded apps and much less in multi-threaded. Maybe I should just get a chimney to exhaust the heat into the attic

SSD OS install should be ok, possibly automatic activation if you have not already used the license key on the COA (otherwise fairly painless phone activation).

Swap out that 6850 for something cooler. NVidia 750 runs about $50 AR right now, very power efficient, runs games ok.

Phenommsrtweaker service is running on my Phenom II 1055T to allow custom voltages and multipliers at the various power states (under 1 GHz for a low power idle, to 4125 MHz turbo).
