Can ne 1 tell me how cud i speed up my transfer rate?

I connect to internet thru a Ehternet 10Mbps LAN(via a hub,CAT 5 cable). The maximum download speed i find is only 6.54Kbps........which consumes more time when i download files larger than 3Mb.........this is very embarrassing .
Even my friend uses an Ethernet connection.........but his transfer rate is >100Kbps at his place.

Its very much disgusting whenever i send or receive files from my friends which this speed. IS there a way to speed up my transfer rate.......not upto 100Kbps.......but atleast 50Kbps for my satisfaction.

The Max Speed depends on the type of Internet service and the Speed as mentioned in your contract. (Information that you forgot to mention).
