Why did the refs call offensive pass interference on that 4th and Goal play? Seemed like it was a legitimate play and the refs called it for FSU.

Receivers can't lock up defenders like that on a passing play.

And I don't think the refs were doing FSU any favors tonight. There were numerous plays where the Noles D-line was getting dragged to the ground that never resulted in holding calls against the Irish.

#8 from Florida state jams up and initiates contact on the ND player who received the penalty. The ND player had to run through the FSU guy who jams him up in order to get a route and get off line of scrimmage.

The FSU guy jams his arms up and into the ND guy off the line of scrimmage and then goes into a wrap up on the ND guy.

Catch is independent of that ticky tack (at best) call anyways.

Can't call that against ND.

You see receivers making those kinds of "blocks" on corners all the time. If you watch the first TD by ND, you'll see the leftmost receiver push the corner into the back corner of the endzone which opens up #88 for the TD pass.

Tough game, really wanted ND to win. Gotta look at it like they still have a chance to get in a playoff though. They can hang with teams like FSU and should win-out while other top teams lose. Shouldn't fall out of the Top 10 after this loss so maybe the loser of this game goes on to win the NC like in 93.

That double pick took out all three defenders. I can see why they called it, but I could also see them not calling it. Its one of those "I dare you to call PI on the last play of the game" plays, because no ref wants to call PI in a spot like that. Even when they lined up you could tell they were going to do some kind of pick.

Same vid with the full play and slowed down with some zoom. Here you can see clearly the FSU player is pulling the ND player so hard as to drive the ND player downwards.

I think the other WR (#7) makes a better case for a call against ND, but the FSU player who got the PI call was holding the ND (#20) player. Not sure if those would offset or replay the down. Even on #7 though you can see it's the FSU who is jamming up into the path of 7.

I see the design of the play as either both #20 or #7 picking FSU #26, depending on whether goes over or under, or #7 picking FSU #26 and #20 picking FSU #8 on a switch. The one good thing FSU did on that play was play it tight, forcing ND to drive into the defenders. DBs are allowed contact within 5 yards. Problem is the the WRs are still driving when the ball is in the air. They should have had their hands in the air or acted like they were fighting through the contact. As it was, they drove the defenders into the end zone. Also, if Robinson went lateral without cross scrimmage it would have been legal.

It actually was the perfect offensive call. They just screwed up on the execution. Even if the receivers just go straight and into the end zone and avoid contact its gonna take the dbs with them. Even if FSU #8 was switching he wouldn't have been able to stop #88 unless he totally jumped the route. On this vine angle, you could even make the case that #20 was blocking FSU #8 when he tried to switch to #88.

The receivers can run their routes, but they cannot block downfield on a forward pass before the completion. When the ball is in the air, defensive players are eligible receivers too. Like I said, I could see a no call, but wouldn't argue with the call either. I think Kelly made a calculated decision when they designed this play that they could get away with it. If the coverage wasn't so tight they probably would have.
