NC Democratic state rep who ran in a D+20 district (Biden carried by 18 points in 2020) just switched to the Republican Party, giving the GOP a legislative supermajority. People started asking questions when she stopped showing up for critical votes but now it’s confirmed.

WTF is this bullshit??? Yes, I’m mad at the NCGOP because no doubt some dirty tricks were involved, but I’m even madder at the NC Democrats. Do they not vet their candidates?? Was there even a primary? Do they not look at her fundraising reports with any scrutiny?? Of course Republicans will reward her by carving out a safe new district for her and making sure she never has to answer to those who elected her.

This, and Florida trying to pass a law dissolving the FL Dem party, the recent shenanigans in TN. Cool, cool, cool.

Setting the stage for 2024, no doubt. Just let the coup be bloodless, please.

Like I said, she won’t, because with a supermajority and recent NC Supreme Court decision, the leg can add as many red voters to her district as they want.

So veto proof majority? They can pass whatever laws they want now. Maybe they got wins that Moore v Harper would not hold, so this is plan B.

yeah, this is bad. I keep thinking I will move back to NC in the next couple of years....but I dunno. It seems like the walls will go up soon and all fertile women will have to turn themselves in to the new Reproduction Task Force within the next year or two.

Reading more into this—Rep. Cotham claims she and her kids were being “bullied” by “Democrats” over issues such as “school choice”—I don’t know what that means? PTA meeting gone wrong? Or does she want money for religious schools? No specific incident cited and other State Dems seem to have no idea what she’s talking about. As far as I can tell, the minority leader only found out about her move when she literally sat down on the other side of the aisle.

I didn’t realize she had served a previous 10 year stint in the statehouse, during which she got on the floor and proclaimed she had had an abortion, it was her difficult choice, and Republicans should steer clear from regulating her body. Let’s see what happens, I guess.

Yes, this seems very odd that someone from such a solid blue district would switch parties like this. Seems like there's probably more to the story.

If she talks in vague rationals I smell a rat. She should be able to give specific examples with names.

It's a product of having primaries instead of caucuses. With a caucus system, the candidates better represent a party's values. With primaries, the candidates represent whoever show up for the election. Candidates have a much easier time bamboozling primary voters than caucus attendees, particularly on down ballot races where voters generally are pretty uninformed about the candidates.

The more I read into this it doesn’t seem like a Trojan Horse—she and her mom were solid blue and known quantities. I’m genuinely concerned if there was someone making threats to her children—but if so she needs to get the authorities involved.

Elected officials can caucus with whoever they want - there isn't some legal requirement to always be a member of the same party.

I have no idea what happened here and maybe there's something shady going on but there's nothing inherently wrong with people switching parties.

If that's her real reason, being in politics she should know the level vindictiveness of Trumpers/Republicans.

There is no match to the level of retribution from the right, that's why I think she is lying and got her skids greased with $$, a future position or a remapped district which gives her a job for life. She's now trying to justify her betrayal.
