NBC Dateline to test recent polls

I can kinda understand NASCAR officials claiming that they are "creating" news but I don't know if I buy it.

I mean, how do you get news stories most of the time? You dig. Sometimes, in the course of digging, you have to use tools. In this case, the "tool" is a reporting crew to observe reactions to verify if the poll that prompted the story is accurate. Also, is this just because NASCAR is wanting to save face by not being seen as an organization that is visited primarily bigoted fans if the polling does seem to hold up? Especially with the stereotypes of the "average" NASCAR fan. It will be interesting to see.

NASCAR said it was "outrageous" that Dateline NBC targeted one of its race tracks last weekend for a possible segment on anti-Muslim sentiment in the United States.

NASCAR said NBC confirmed it was sending Muslim-looking men to a race, along with a camera crew to film fans' reactions. The NBC crew was "apparently on site in Martinsville, Va., walked around and no one bothered them," NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said Wednesday.

"It is outrageous that a news organization of NBC's stature would stoop to the level of going out to create news instead of reporting news," Poston said.

"Any legitimate journalist in America should be embarrassed by this stunt. The obvious intent by NBC was to evoke reaction, and we are confident our fans won't take the bait," he said.

NASCAR is in the final year of a broadcasting agreement with NBC Sports.

"Dateline is looking into this story," NBC said in a statement. "We were intrigued by the results of a recent Washington Post/ABC News poll and other articles regarding increasing anti-Muslim sentiments in the United States.

"It's very early on in our newsgathering process, but be assured we will be visiting a number of locations across the country and are confident that our reporting team is pursuing this story in a fair manner," it said.

I find it to be more of an experiment than a publicity stunt. The results could be an important precedent to other investigations regarding the prejudices created from political agendas.

I heard about this yesterday. Dateline has an agenda to prove how racist white people are. To do this they did the following:

NASCAR said NBC confirmed it was sending Muslim-looking men to a race, along with a camera crew to film fans' reactions. The NBC crew was "apparently on site in Martinsville, Va., walked around and no one bothered them," NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said Wednesday.

It was not just Muslim-looking men it was Muslim men dressed in full Muslim garb. When the story they wanted did not happen they refused to run a different story. They wanted reactions stares, comments, perhaps even violence. Instead of reporting how amazed they were that Muslim's were fully accepted they killed the story. My guess that they will continue working on this story and will even incite an incident, edit the film, and then air a story that proves that ALL whites are racists. You can bet that if any minority makes any negative comments or rude gestures to the Muslims that it will not be aired.

I notice that Dateline is not reversing the story showing how a Hispanic high school girl went to a pro-break-the-law rally with the American flag drapped over her shoulders and how the other protestors surrounded her, cursed her, told her she was #1 by raising their middle fingers in salute of her, yelled at her, threatened her. Luckily, she was Hispanic and had the protection of a film crew so she was not killed. Nor have they shown how Anglo women have been beaten by the crowds.

As for Dateline's story, this story is much like their stories of gasoline tanks exploding upon impact. Crash, after crash failed to have any tanks explode. That didn't stop them they finally proved that the tanks would explode and aired the series. I would suggest that not many put explosives in their tanks and then set the explosives off when they are rear ended. Still, for those of you who do that Dateline is correct, your tanks will explode. Of course, why go through the accident, simply set the explosion off! That, however, would not fullfill Dateline's agenda.

Viva Fake-but-True!

Neil Boortz was talking about this story this morning. From what I heard, the NASCAR fans weren't racist at all. But Neil dared NBC to put white guy in a muslim crowd and see what happens.

You assume too much. They didn't act out in a racist manor. Who knows what they were thinking. We know how a majority of American think about Muslims (via polls), do you think NASCAR people are more or less accepting of non-white non-Christians? I know that answer...

I'd rather be the Muslim guy in the middle of a bunch of NASCAR fans then the white guy in the middle of Iraq anyday.

I didn't condone their dumb story, I just didn't agree with "the NASCAR fans weren't racist at all".

I've heard that they used Sikhs. How does this test people's anti-Muslim reactions?

sadly enough, most people do not know of, or understand, the difference. Most Sikhs wear a turban, so they fit the common arab stereotype. I'm fairly sure that they used Sihks, rather than Muslims, in an effort to show an even higher level of ignorance. What's funny is that they still failed to create the scene they had hoped to instigate...

also, for the record and those who think otherwise: other than in Iraq, white men dont have much to fear if/when they walk down a street filled with Muslims. In most of the Muslim world, yes, they will notice you; but, you're fairly safe if you remain aware of your surroundings and dont wander alone into any alleys. It's that very small .01% who you need to watch out for, not the entire race and religion!

Oh no, a proponent of now how you treat people but how you think about them. Hopefully you are not really a male otherwise someday a certain segment of society will say that all men are rapists because of how men THINK women look and thus, need to be castrated.

By comparing the reactions observed by the film crew and "Muslims" and observing the reaction of other races in similar situations it is pretty good evidence that the average Nascar fan is far less racist. But, then I believe most, not all, Nasar fans are probably conservative.
