NBA Regular Season Tip Off Thread

I'm a Dallas Mavs fan and our season kicks off tonight. We added Shawn Marion, got Kidd resigned, and got a first round pick point guard to throw in the mix. I'm thinking it will be a good year for the mavs. I'm predicting a top 4 finish in the conference and if we're lucky maybe a western conference showdown with the lakers. I'm picking lakers to win it all against the cavs in the finals.

I'm ready for the season to start too, kinda hard for a Spurs fan to not be psyched. I can guarantee you that we'll get a bunch of crap from the Laker's fans - but Artest was a terrible signing for them, IMO.

I think the Finals will be the Spurs vs. Celtics - oh, and sucks that J. Howard will be out for awhile.

Go Bulls. I'm looking forward to watching some games altho unfortunately I don't have a broadcast package this year.

Btw, Blake Griffin is out atleast 6 weeks with a broken kneecap (hairline).

Why are you hyped up over the spurs? All they did was get Jefferson right? I think the spurs are a little old. Ginobili is falling apart and Duncan's feet and knees can't hold up anymore. I look for the mavericks to be in first in the sw division. I'm really not too worried about Howard right now. Marion plays the same position and can hold it down till he gets back.

Oh wow - I mean seriously, WOW.

Jefferson, McDyess, and DeJuan Blair. Manu is healthy, and Duncan's body is perfectly fine at this point. Most of the older players were traded off to get Jefferson, and our average age is much younger than it ever was.

Ugh, I don't want to get into this again - I really should just stay out of the NBA threads on this forum.

P.S. My wife is a Mavs fan, and thinks the Spurs had a better off-season.

McDyes is about the same age as Mutumbo. Never heard of Blair. Hopefully Jefferson will pass the ball to Duncan or Giniboli sometimes.:D

You will. His preseason/summer league #'s have been off the charts, even tho he fell to the 2nd round.

The Spurs & Celtics in the finals? The folks that own Ben-Gay and The AARP would love to see that happen. They'd be advertising heavily.

:D

Seriously, I don't think either team can keep their aging line-ups healthy enough for 80+ regular season games to even compete in the play-offs. I predict neither will make it past the second round, if they even get that far.

LA is going to own the West again this year and the Magic will own the East. Cleveland will compete closely in the East but LeShaq won't be able to do it all by themselves, though they'll give it their best shot.

Uh, average age of the spurs is 28.6, Laker's is 26.9, Mav's is 28.7, Cav's is 26.8, Orlando is 28.1 and Boston is 27.8.

McDyess is the 35 - several years younger than Dikembe. Ratliff & Finley is the oldest at 36. Only 5 of the 15 players are over 30. Sorry, but the Spurs no longer hold that whole AARP card thing.

The east is getting strong. Celtics, Cavs, Magic, and to a lesser extent Chicago and Atlanta all have teams that have serious potential.

I think the east sneaks out with the title this year, just not sure which of those five mentioned above is going to do it. Portland is my dark horse pick for the west. Another year of experience and a no talent loss offseason with addition of a true PG in Miller and they are going deep in the playoffs this time.

Quoted for the LULZ. This will be that douchebags last year in the NBA, mark my words. His flopping has done major damage to his body and more specifically his ankles.

On the other hand, the spurs have upgraded their team from last year. The western conference will be interesting, and (OH GOD NO) I actually agree that it will probably be Spurs vs. Lakers in the WCF. I hope to god the lakers win (Lesser of two evils).

Team average doesn't mean a whole lot. Teams compete with their first teams. What are the average ages of the starting line-ups? It's nice that the Spurs have some young talent in the wings, but their key players are aging. Could the Spurs still contend without Duncan on the floor, or if Ginobli goes down again? What about the Celts? Ray Allen, Garnett, Pierce, and Rasheed are all old-timers (in basketball years). If Garnett doesn't get healthy in the first place (he's still not close to 100% from last year's injury) the Celts won't be competitive.

Lakers - 29.2
Derek Fisher - 35
Kobe Bryant - 31
Ron Artest - 29
Pau Gasol - 29
Andrew Bynum - 22

Spurs - 30.6
Tony Parker - 27
Roger Mason - 29
Richard Jefferson - 29
Antonio McDyess - 35
Tim Duncan - 33

Celtics - 29.2
Rajon Rondo - 23
Ray Allen - 34
Paul Pierce - 32
Kevin Garnett - 33
Kendrick Perkins - 24

Starting lineup avg age difference isn't that big. You should also consider the amount of games most of them have under their belts. Sorry, but the age argument isn't getting very far this year.

The age argument was a factor last year, and another year even further along I don't see how it's no longer valid.

I guess we will just have to wait and see how it all plays out. If the old-timers can keep their health and durability for 82 regular season games and the playoffs, good on 'em. History doesn't bode well for that argument though.

its all lakers and spurs in teh west. everyone else is a pretender. i think the lakers got stronger with artest and everyone has been dismissing the spurs since the beginning of this decade who are younger and deeper this year than their last 2 championships.
