Big contracts man, teams want to dump big contracts so they can make room to attract free agents.

NBA is a business, retaining the better player sometimes is not the best business decision, as soon as you get this through your head, it is not hard to see at all why they are doing this.

Some people won't get taken becuase of their huge contracts, so they can be left unprotected and still be safe.

Exactly. A new team can't afford to spend all their cash on 1 or 2 superstars so these guys are left "unrestricted" b/c everyone knows the new team is not going to take them b/c of their huge contracts.

A new team doesn't have as high a salary cap as an existing franchise so there is no way they can grab someone with such a huge contract.

While they Bobcats do have a lower than normal cap of about $30 million, they can select as whoever they want in the expansion draft, even if it would put em over. They just wouldn't have any room for free agents.

The NBA salary cap is a soft cap, meaning you can go over, just lotsa rules to govern it.

"We're not interested in guys who have three or four years left on their contracts," Bickerstaff said. "The guys we're looking at all have one year remaining, but they're all very talented kids who need an opportunity."

looks like they're looking for contracts to dump (to free up cap space for FA) or for trade bait to other teams.

I see. Some of those players have surprisingly big salaries!
Tariq Abdul-Wahad $21m 3yr
Danny Fortson $19m 3yr
Austin Croshere $27m 3yr
Shandon Anderson $23m 3yr
Calvin Booth $18m 3yr

Their teams are probably hoping the Hornets would take these deadweights.
