NBA did to EA what the NFL couldn't do...

NBA rejects EA's proposal for exclusive gaming rights.

One of the reasons is that the NBA Live series simply doesn't have a stranglehold on the market the way Madden has for years, so by signing an exclusive deal with EA, the NBA would actually be losing money. There are simply too many NBA video game properties that sell big units for the deal to make sense, from the ESPN NBA series to NBA Ballers to 989's games that are set to hit both the PS2 and PSP.

It's all about the money... If the NBA stood to profit apples to apples like the NFL did, they would've done the exact same thing.

Btw, from what I understand, the NFL was the one who approached the publishers in the spring about getting bids for the exclusive deal. Put yourself in EA's shoes... What would you expect them to do, allow another publisher to snatch up the rights???

I'm one of the biggest NFL2k fans around. Haven't purchased a Madden title since NFL2k on the Dreamcast. But I don't place the blame on EA for this one.

Nah, actually EA said they first approached the NFL about this a couple years back but were told no. Guess they finally ponied up enough money to make the NFL pick up the phone again.

Yes, EA has been looking for this for a while. However, it was this spring that the NFL decided to take bids from all of the interested publishers.

I wonder what's going to happen with the next NFL video game deal. As all the other publishers will have shut down their franchises, EA might be the only bidder next time around. Which means they won't be coughing up the really big bucks anymore.

i really woudl've liked to have seen ESPN come with an over the top offer and lock EA out of the NFL rights. Can you imagine the reactions of all the madden whores out there who salivate every year for the next roster update? Not only that but ESPN would have complete control of a market that they have little control over right now.

EDIT: Its a five year contract. I bet we will see a open source game by then with fantasy-league type imports
