I watching watching a documentary of Hitler that was based on all the video footage they had of him, some it just now restored. They said that after the defeat in Russia Hitler became withdrawn and didn't want to talk to his own generals. They had footage of him just daydreaming in his chair at meetings. They said the only time he showed any caring was when he played with his dogs. It was like he just gave up on the war.

Because he knew the war was lost, especially after Stalingrad. And he knew his own meddling is what caused the defeat. The Nazi's had a window of about 12 months to beat the Soviets. They had an opportunity in late August but turned army group center around to encircle 650,000 Soviets at Kiev because army group south couldnt do it along. This set them back a month and they ended up in Moscow one month later than they would and this gave the Soviets 1 month to prepare defensive measures, get troops back from the East, and let winter arrive.

All wasnt lost but instead of going for Moscow in the Spring they head South to capture the oil producing regions of the Caucus and Stalingrad. The Soviets baited them into Stalingrad and shut the door.
