After Capt Crozier was relieved of command of the carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt, he was replaced by the ship's former captain, Rear Admiral Select Carlos Sardiello.

What is a Rear Admiral Select? (Google has failed me)

They are captains who have been "selected" for promotion to Rear Admiral but not yet actually promoted.
geez.. ok.

i was thinking Rear Admiral Select was a new additional level in the Rear Admiral subclass that was recently enacted.
ie: Rear Admiral lower half, Rear Admiral upper half

edit:
By tradition in the United States Navy, when an officer is selected or appointed to flag rank, all current Navy flag officers write the selectee a letter congratulating him or her for attaining flag officer status.

thats alot of letters these new 22 rear admirals are getting.
wonder if it's copy/paste 22 times for each of the current flag officers? :p

Commodore sounds much better than rear admiral.
yes.
less confusing to us civilians.

Commodore = rear adm lower half = 1 star
rear adm upper half (or just rear adm) = 2 star

edit:
wiki to the rescue: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commodore_(United_States)

Commodore was recreated in 1982 as a 1star rank but eliminated in 1983 due to confusion and objections due to the honorary title Commodore was still given to navy Captains who commanded more than 1 ship. ie: destroyer squadron
these honorary Commodores still had the rank of Captain.

hm.. so the Rank of Commodore would have worked if the Navy just had the balls to strip the Captains of the honorary title of Commodore?
