Navy Tests High Tech Stealth Boat

An odd-looking, fast, stealthy, high tech catamaran is cruising off the shores of Virginia this summer. It's called the P-960 KNM Skjold (pronounced "shold," Norwegian for "shield"). The US Navy is studying it to see if it will help protect the American coastline from attack and serve on foreign coastlines during overseas missions. Tonight's "Tech Live" reports.

Designed for missions in coastal waters, the Norwegian-built vessel can race at speeds of about 60 mph. It can also fool radar. Radar-absorbing materials in the hull make it look like a small fishing boat on an enemy radar screen, instead of a ship half the size of a football field. And the Skjold is networked from bow to stern with nearly 40 computers.

Question: Why does it have a DESERT SAND camoflauge theme? Or is there something about this boat we don't know about yet?

i find it amusing that on the techtv page, at the bottom there's a link to "buy this product now at amazon" (sadly, it just refers to the "catalog of tomorrow").

5 feet off the water, hmm? that's pretty cool. the american one looks makes me think of the stealth boat in tomorrow never dies.

from the article:
It's built of a light, superstrong foam composite about 3 inches thick.
Wow! One big, giant beer cooler! Now we're talking!

But my question:
If it starts taking hits from drug runner boats near Miami, will there be a detail of sailors who'll run around with cans of fix-a-flat or instant foam insulation to make repairs?

That's because the Sea Shadow was built as a prototype for a missile platform, not as a speedboat.
