System Works 2000 with paid NAV Live Update subscription. Symantec knows of this problem, and even have a form you can fill out to be notified when they come up with a fix.

Symantec POS "have a nice day, but yo' definitions ain't gonna be updated", so live with it

Anywho, I've run through all their "troubleshooting", and, sure enough, this is my problem. Oh, and they offer to let you call their techsupport line and pay $29.95.

This is my legal version of System Works 2000, W98SE. I bought their definition subscription a few months ago, and only now have started to have problem. It wouldn't be so bad if I could do a manual update, but even that doesn't work.

Anyone else have this problem? Were you able to fix it?

I swore, back in the days of the Norton Utilities 3.* fiasco, after they had come out with a patch to 3.09, that I would always warez Symantec products. Yeah, I have only myself to blame.

I've never had a problem with Norton anything. Why are you paying for updates when the first year's free and they usually come out with a new version before then? Only a friend of mine has run out her NAV free year and it was only ~$4 to buy another year.

Have you tried emailing them or searching Deja, or did you decide it would be better to brag about your w4r3z1n6 to show your superiority to those who pay up for their SW?

No DefRef, I'd only wanna show my superiority over you...not to anyone else on this board. But, I figgered it'd be too easy to just come out and insult a punk like yo'self. Maybe you'll have a nice life when you are out of puberty.

For anyone other than DefRef that might care:

1. I own SystemWorks and ponied up for the $4/yr sub months ago, and have my Subscription Verification Number.
2. Email got nada.
3. If it was warez, I wouldn't be asking on Anandtech if anyone else had run into this problem.

If you just wan the NAV virus definitions, go here:

http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/defs.download.html

You can download the whole def file and save it to your drive. Just double click on the file and it installs the latest defs to your NAV. But this downloads the whole def file, usually 2-3mb. Slower than doing LiveUpdate obviously but it works and you can save the files for use on other machines or if you reinstall your system and the site is updated every few days.

I've had probs with LiveUpdate in the past and eventually gave up. I prefer using the above method.

Use Live Update, or like Rob said download them manually. Just re-install it and have another year free. Jee they still havent fix that one yet. One for the good guys I guess.

Rob G.--Thanks for the idea. I have tried that, but, still no luck. It refuses to update. Before my subscription expired, I also had trouble with Live Update and that was the solution I used at the time, and it did work. I was under the impression that a person would always be able to update via this method, but, since I have gotten the message that my sub has expired, and the number I am entering is not correct, the manual update also will not install.

Rob G.--I have had problems with Live Update in the past with LU downloading and thinking the defs had been installed, but they hadn't. Symantec does have some fix/troubleshooting solutions on their site (or did) for LU problems. I did use one of these in the past, and, it fixed my LU. In fact, it changed the whole look of LU. I hadn't had a bit of problem with LU since...until now.

NicColt--Yeah, I thought about the reinstall, but really don't want to, and for me, NAV is worth the $4/yr. fee......if it works.

I did just call Symantec's subscription phone number. It seems that the subscription number is only good for 10 days from the date you purchase it, and, since my NAV is demanding a number now, it wants a recent number. Anyway, they had me in their db and gave me a new number, so, I'll give it a try. From what she said, it appears that it will work.

Could this be a precursor of the soon-to-be Windows registration fiasco?

For the most part, I've been pleased with Symantec stuff, and am impressed with how well it runs on the gamut of systems it has to support. It's not perfect, but is stable on my system. LOL....the same couldn't be said for NU 3.*. What trash. I remember their newsgroup was getting so bombarded with people, like myself, who had their systems hosed by it, that a poster representing himself as the CEO even posted once a week and apologized for the problems being caused.

No no no I mean that NAV had a flaw, if you re-installed it, it would reset your subscription to 364 days.

Now it tracks your registration to your subscription. which means that even if you re-install it your registration will be the same, so your subscription time will also be the same. which means that even if you re-install it you won't get a free year.

I didn't try this out yet but I think this is what it is now.
