NATO, trying to end the stalemate, put the issue Sunday to its Defense Planning Committee, which excludes France. Paris left NATO's military command structure in the late 1960s and participates only in political, not military, consultations.

So France isn't even part of the military side of NATO anymore and they're trying to block a defensive move? :disgust:

Technically, wouldn't they need to have a "military" to do be part of it??

this all seems like a formality to me. why did turkey ask nato for assistance when they already know they have the full backing of the u.s.? shouldn't that be enough?

most likely the u.s. asked turkey to make this meaningless request just to raise more tension...the french feel like they're being railroaded because they dont want to follow the stupid lead of the u.s. government. they aren't saying no because they're saying "no" to defending turkey, they're saying no to the u.s. aggression in iraq which will possibly cause an attack on turkey.

why are allying ourselves with turkey when they are just as bad as iraq at treating their own people? maybe because we need them so we look the other way.
