Nationalism vs Racism.

Let's see....My original question still hasn't been answered. If I think my own country is the best, because of what it has accomplished...that's ok around here. If I think my own race is the best, because of what it has accomplished....that's not ok, and I'm labeled a racist, maybe banned?

Now of course a person from quite a few different countries could make that claim, and come up with good reasons to back up the claim. Persons from any race could also make that claim, complete with reasons. And of course anyone could oppose both claims with good reasons.

The question again is: Why is it tolorated to love one's country, but not to love one's race?

Your question has been answered very clearly and very objectively. If you still cannot comprehend what people are trying to say, I can come to only one of two conclusions - either you are truly naive or you are trying to bait people into making racist remarks. If I am mistaken, I apologize

athithi......That's the whole point. If you make a racist remark here, you could suffer severe consequences. However I read posts constantly making really nasty comments, not always in jest, about almost every country.....USA, Canada, France, Palestine, Germany.....plus all the others. What is the difference? You can curse the country across the border, but not the people, the race across the border. Explain that....

Ok, now you changed your question. It is not how superior you think your race is, but how inferior you think the other races are? If your problem is with people making callous remarks about other countries and getting away with it, yes, you have a point. Your original question appeared to ask why you weren't allowed to make racist remarks.

I reiterate - nations are the results of differences that are of man's own making. Racial differences are not ones that we chose or had any say over. Essentially, as the citizen of a particular country you have the liberty, maybe even a duty, of criticizing another country. Your country and that other country are different by choice. To criticize a person for belonging to a particular race is to deny that person an equality as a human being because, racial distinction is at an existential level, not a conscious one. It is to say that the other person has been born as an unequal.

From the Declaration of Independence of the U.S...

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

When the very nationhood of the U.S identifies human inequality as external to its existence, what is so difficult about distinguishing between racism and nationalism? If you are a U.S citizen, it would appear to me that nationalism and racism are mutually exclusive. Obviously, that makes 'nationalist racists' oxymorons....or perhaps, just plain morons ;)

Agreed 100%. It's totally counterproductive. It's one thing to take pride in your locale (city/town, county, state/province, country), but quite another to claim superiority of one locale to another. That was one of the best lessons I took away from my trip to Europe a couple of years ago. Visited eight countries...each was unique. Individual elements might be more/less advanced from place to place, but nothing about any country as a whole or its citizens was any more or less superior than the others.

Pride in America goes off the deep end frequently.
