Don't fall into the trap. Obviously a card is just a card. It's the information on it and how it is used that gives an ID card any meaning and effectiveness whatsoever.

Nobody said anything about the number... it was the card itself we were discussing.
Because as we all know there's no connection between the card and number.
So then, what is your issue with instituting a new National ID card, if it's nothing more than the same system we already have - but with added (biometric) countermeasures against forgery?

Two wrongs don't make a right. Slippery slope isn't valid in this case. Just because we're getting raped right now doesn't mean we should be in favor of doing away with the lube.

Maybe we should go back to being Amish and wait for our end at the hand of Eskimos sweeping down on polar bears from the North.

I'm kinda ambivilent.

While I don't like the big brother *traking* senario some describe here, I've already got a DL, SSN, passport and concealed carry permit (which means even my fingerprints are already on record.)

Tracking purchases? Jeez, since I use a CC for almost everything I bet they can already track that stuff if they want (and get a warrent).

When I try to imagine the HUGE buearocratic effort it would take to do this properly, well I just can't see our government pulling it off. Gawd, they can't process passports now.

Yes, but each of those forms of id is not comprehensive in any way. Which is exactly what a national id is. Its impossible to get ALL your personal info from either a passport or a DL. But if you combine all the information on your separate forms of id onto a single card... it makes tracking , spying , id theft very very easy.

Furthermore the act also calls for "interlinking" of databases. That is govt agencies are supposed to combine your bank records, your phone records etc to all interlinked through your national id #, to make it tamper proof.

The big flipside is that govt officials now have an opportunity to have access to ALL your personal information at a single given time.

I'm sorry, but you are the only person in this thread who thinks all we're talking about is a physical piece of plastic.

I don't see the difference between this and a DL really, other than being a standardized deal.
You guys are scared of authorities asking for papers, not the papers existing. It's two different things.
I don't see people burning DL's and SS cards.
What vital info is this supposed to have the a DL doesnt't?
You're not required to take them with you everywhere you go.
You only need a drivers licence when you are in a car AND on a public road.

Part of the above mentioned program isnt just "the papers existing", its also a requirement that you have them on you all the time, if not you get taken in.

And nobody actually requires a look at your social security card, they require the number for some things. But for that you can just write it in on the form and they will check it out somewhere else.
