Take this time now to check your smoke alarm batteries! In fact, they should be checked every month. They say once a week, but that's going too far in my opinion. I bought a smoke alarm that is optical and ionization which will help detect small smoldering fires. It's placed near the utility room and I will buy more to replace the plain old ionization smoke detectors. I also have placed an ABC fire extinguisher in all major rooms including the kitchen and near the fire place. Fire is no joke. No fire is too small for the fire Dept. Call your emergency phone number immediately! You may in fact think it's out but there could be a hot spot. Fire Departments have FLIR guns to detect hot spots. I used to be a fire fighter explorer and was in a smoke house. The temps were about 400 in there and they tell me it could have been hotter, but the one thing I walked away with was the sheer fact you can't see anything! It's completely dark. A fire can get out of control VERY quickly. So create an escape plan and learn it!

I'm preparing for the celebration.

I've been an EMT for 8 years, currently out of Staten Island University Hospital. Here's a tip for you...

"In an emergency you should always call 911 and not try to deal with any situation alone. Delaying calling can lead to traumatic results. Getting medical attention as quick as possible often saves many lives that may have ended due to lack of quick medical attention. If you have chest pain don't brush it off, get it checked - it may save your life."

I'm going over to Cerpin's place tonight with a case of beer.
