Nasty unreliable datagrams

celeritas

I'm running Half-Life dedicated server v4106 with Jumbot v2.4 & 4-10 bots, and running a client session (v1106) on the same box (different ports). Within about 30 seconds after entering the game, my client session freezes and the sound hiccups. I have to CTRL+ALT+DEL and kill the hl.exe process (Win2k Pro). I check the HLDS window, and see a string of:

unreliable datagram for (my player's name), would overflow.

I did a search on various Half-Life sites, but couldn't find anyone that reported this error. This happens in any map (and with no bots), and my netgraph, etc. doesn't give any indication of a problem. The screen, etc. just freezes. Has anyone else had this problem or can provide a link to a site where others have had and fixed it? Thanks.

I agree... Let's approach this another way. Those of you who've experienced similar symptoms; e.g., sound hiccuping, screen freezing, etc. shortly into games, what did it turn out to be? What did you do (reinstall, change drivers, etc.) to fix the problem? Since many people may not be running both HL dedicated server and client on the same box, they may not see the "unreliable datagrams" that I do. TIA

I have that EXACT same problem in counterstrike. But, it is nonexistent in other games (eg. Black & White, NFS4). I have ruled out that it is just system instability, as I can run quake 3 loop all day without any problems. So, I took out my soundcard (SB Live) and the problem is much alleviated. I use onboard audio now and it has since only happened once over about a weeks time, which is still unacceptable to me, especially when you're kickin some ass in a match only to turn a corner and then the deadly freeze, sound hiccup happens. I am looking to upgrade my motherboard pretty soon. I just hope that will fix this all too annoying problem. Lemme know if you make any progress towards a fix also.

Who runs a HL/CS server? What sites do you use to troubleshoot server error messages? The ones I've been on don't cover this particular problem.

Last bump.

Is this forum not the right one to ask about HL/CS server errors? 😛 It seems that there's quite a few of you in here who run them, so I figured you'd also have seen problems like this one and could provide ideas/links to fix them.

I asked this question last week in the Planet Halflife forums, and my post is still unanswered... 🙁
